Evolution Electric Bass Rick for Kontakt - NOW AVAILABLE!

Orange Tree Samples is proud to present Evolution Electric Bass - Rick, a deeply-sampled electric bass guitar sample library. At its core, Evolution Electric Bass - Rick consists of extensive samples complemented by a powerful script. These two facets work in unison to give you ultra-realistic bass sounds with minimal effort.

Evolution Electric Bass - Rick has chromatic samples for each string, meaning that each fret was individually sampled. It has 32x round-robin and three morphing velocity layers for a smooth dynamic range. It has time-dependent release samples (15 different release times sampled) as well as time-dependent legato samples. The legato samples consist of hammer-ons and pull-off articulations sampled chromatically up to a minor 3rd upward and a minor 3rd downward as well as chromatic half-step slides. These legato samples were sampled at up to eight different transition times. We also sampled muted notes (8x round-robin), pre-roll samples (32x round-robin), muted slap samples (8x round-robin, 8 velocities), as well as slap releases (4x round-robin). The slap releases were sampled chromatically on each string, so they are specific release transitions from a sustained note.

We spent a lot of time making the interface and engine as flexible and customizable as possible, without forsaking instant playability. Essentially, we put you in complete control over how the mapping, tone, and other settings work, but have everything set to defaults that make it easy to load and start playing with minimal tweaking.
By emphasizing realism and playability, we're confident that playing Evolution Electric Bass - Rick will give you the same excitement and inspiration as playing a real bass guitar.

Key Features:
- Over 7 GB of samples (4.7 GB using Kontakt's NCW lossless compressed format)
- 32x round-robin, 3 morphing velocity layers, chromatically sampled
- Advanced scripting with legato articulations, slides, and much more
- Onboard amp/cab modeling, compressor, EQ, and chorus effects
- Internal factory presets as well as external preset system for easy sharing of presets

NI's is played with a pick and IIRC Orange Tree's is fingered so they could complement each other. I bought the NI one when it came out and like it a lot, but I think I want this one too. The PDF manual indicates some nice features. I like the idea that you can send the neck pick up to a seperate output in Kontakt.
I am travelling again now so I wont be buying untill late July. I would be very intrested in the opinion of anyone who has both the NI and OT Rick's.

I have them both and just as you say they complement each other. NI is a bit "rougher" due to picking. And maybe it is round wounded strings on NI and flat on OT but that I don't know.
    But both are fantastic.
Play Chris Squire Yes preset and you are sold on OT... :)

One of the common requests I got while developing Evolution Electric Bass Rick was to include presets that instantly give you the bass tones of iconic bassists.

Here's a list of the artist presets included with Evolution Electric Bass - Rick. Can you guess which artists these refer to?

    Chris Says Yes
    Rush Order
    Who's On Bass
    Macca
    Snow Petroleum
    Purple Rainbows
    This One's Pink
    In The Beginning
    Coldfish
    Lemming
    Thin Lizard
    Vampire We Can
    Pilgrim

Of course, we also have a bunch of other tone presets included, too. We made it easy to scroll through these presets within Evolution Electric Bass Rick's own interface--that way you can easily audition the presets without having to close and reload entire Kontakt patches.

We also have an external preset system, so you can save your own tone presets as NKA files that can be shared between projects or other users.

Had a look at the manual: couldn't find a list of all articulations/possible keyswitches. Is there a list somewhere? I am very interested in this one. Up to now my main bass is NI's (Scarbee's) Pre-Bass but this one seems to have a LOT more going on when it comes to release/attack/transition sounds and round-robins, which obviously enhances the realism a lot, specially when you sometimes use the bass solo or when the arrangement is simple/acoustic/basic and the bass can be actually heard in a song.

About this one complementing the new NI one: if I can only get one, which should I get? (Maybe an odd question in a topic created by the creator of one of the plugins, but well...). Does one have (a lot) more articulations etc. than the other or not?

Sonar 8.5 PE, Edirol FA-66, Behringer C-1. All instruments in my songs are VSTi's.

Here are all the articulations available on the mapping page (where you can map each to keyswitches, velocity ranges, controller ranges, etc.):

    Sustain
    Mutes
    Grace Note Up
    Grace Note Down
    Buzz Trill
    Whole-Step Slide In
    Whole-Step Hammer In
Slide From Last Note (uses velocity to determine the slide speed)
1/4th Slide (tempo-synced so that it reaches the destination note perfectly at the next quarter note)
    1/8th Slide
    Repeat on Release
    Repeating 1/4ths
    Repeating 1/8ths
    Repeating 1/16ths
    Unison Fifths
    Unison Octaves

The sustains have 32x round-robin and 3 morphing dynamic layers. The release samples are duration-dependent, being sampled at 15 different release times. The legato samples include hammer-ons and pull-offs sampled chromatically up to a minor 3rd interval, and there are chromatically sampled half-note slides. Like the release samples, the legato samples are time-dependent. We sampled them at up to 8 different transition times. There are also pre-roll samples, muted notes (8x RR, 3x velocities), muted slapped strings (8x RR, 8x velocities), and slap release transitions (4x RR, sampled for each note).

Aw, yer killin' me, Greg. I can't afford this for another month or two, even though it's been on my wishlist from the day you first mentioned you were starting to work on a Rickenbacker library. Maybe you could just sell me a few notes for, say, 10 bucks? All I really need is E and A to get started.

As this is an "open" library where the developer has not paid a fee to NI you will not see it in the libraries tab in Kontakt. You have to use the file browser and navigate to the folder where you placed the NKI file and open it.

Re: Evolution Electric Bass Rick for Kontakt - NOW AVAILABLE! 2013/07/02 02:17:36 (permalink)
Yeah--unfortunately, as of now only Kontakt Player instruments can be loaded using the "Add Library" option in the library tab. So right now you have to manually load the patches, by clicking on the "Files" button, then "Load...", or using Kontakt's browser tab.

If it's of any help, Kontakt also has a quickload feature, which allows you to drag your favorite libraries into a list (which can be organized into folders). That's what I use, even with Kontakt Player libraries, because of the organizational capabilities. Of course, you don't get the pretty library tab art... ;)

In terms of installation, I kept the engine RAR and the samples RAR files separate, so that if there are updates in the future you don't have to redownload the whole thing. As long as you have all the RAR files in the same place, and then extract the "EEB-Engine.rar" file and the "EEB-Samples.part1.rar" using the "extract here" option, everything should install properly.

The reason you only need to extract the part1.rar of the samples is because it's a multi-part RAR file--when extracting the first part, it automatically extracts the rest of the parts, too.

Let me know if you're able to get it working, or if you need more detailed installation instructions. The user's guide PDF (click here to download) has a section with installation instructions, too.

Just as a side note, developing Kontakt Player instruments that can be loaded into the Libraries tab requires licensing the Kontakt Player, which is a pretty hefty investment. It's not such a big deal for libraries that are priced $299 upward, but for single instrument, less expensive libraries it's tough. That's why most Kontakt Player libraries are collections of instruments, too.

As an example Soundiron have both "open" and "Kontakt Player" versions of their Olympus Elements choir. - The player version is an extra $20 - a full 20% more expensive.

Not worth it, IMHO. I have lots of both and it really isn't a problem browsing for the files. You guys have already covered the really important stuff

As an example Soundiron have both "open" and "Kontakt Player" versions of their Olympus Elements choir. - The player version is an extra $20 - a full 20% more expensive.

Interesting. That $20 would not come close to covering NI's cut. But you're right: they do indeed offer a player-compatible version for 20 bucks more.

This approach has been suggested in the past, offering two versions of Kontakt libraries, one registered and the other open. However, my understanding is that NI actively discourages that by levying the license fee based on units sold. It's the same tactic Microsoft uses for licensing Windows to OEMs, which is why it costs the same to buy a computer with or without Windows preloaded. The OEM pays MS either way. (Note that NI licensing terms are a closely-guarded secret; I've heard you have to sign a NDA just to get a quote from them.)

For this reason I'd assumed that if Greg and other Kontakt content developers were to offer such two-tiered pricing it would only result in higher prices for us full-Kontakt users. But it appears that at least one company has figured out a loophole.

I also see that SoundIron offers the product on DVD at no extra cost beyond shipping. That's nice.

I've never been a big fan of the picked sound of a bass, so for me this was an easy choice...

    Downloaded, which took some patience<G>
Installed, which went without a hitch
Played... and played and played and played, literally could not peel myself away. Probably the most fun I've had with a guitar or bass VI. I am a guitar and bass player, so I tend to be a little more picky about these sort of libraries.

The thing that fascinates me about this is the play-ability. At first I was a bit confused about the key switching, but once I figured it out I had a blast. I think that the whole articulation assignment screen may be the new gold standard, it takes the concepts introduced in OT Mind Control to a new level! Really, it's that cool.

(at the risk of sounding greedy and ungrateful - Hey Greg! Any chance we'll see the articulation assignment an control find it's way into the guitar libraries?? Pretty please!!!)

Got my head wrapped around the new way of loading the library. This is a really great VI. So many options that my eyes glaze over, but thankfully the presets are great. I like the fact that I can great tones from presets while being free to dig as deep as I want. Now all I need is a midi interface so I can plug in my old P bass as a controller.

    Great job Greg!

Yes, that's absolutely what I plan on doing! I'm thinking of making the new script (with the fancy, easy-to-use mapping system) for the next Evolution guitar library, and then update the existing Evolution guitars to this new engine as well.
