Evolution Electric Guitar
I'm thinking about taking the plunge towards the Orange Tree Evolution Electric Guitar - Strawberry.
Does anyone have any comments about it from a user perspective, either good or bad?

I'm mostly wondering about the rhythm guitar and how authentic it sounds. There are some demos but I haven't heard enough to be certain of what it offers.

Its as good as it gets with software. For rhythm there are two options. Use the built in strum sequencer, or my prefered method trigger the strums from a keyboard and record on a midi track. This way you get twelve user definable articualtions (ie up stroke, down stroke, mutes, different strum speeds, top "n" strings only, etc.) Each preset has its own but you can define your own chord vocings. Three alternative voicings are set up to change with the mod wheel position. There is a learning curve but it can sound very good. Of course you will need an Amp sim too. It's recorded straight from the pickups. Greg is working on a update - there is a thread on KVR, which should make it better. Cheaper, less versatile, but more intuitive (to me at least) is Indiginus' Torch Guitar.

+1 to everything Glyn Barnes said, including the mention of Torch, which is an excellent value at fifty bucks. We're all looking forward to the promised EEG update, which will include built-in amp sims. As noted above, EEG's samples were recorded direct, making an amp sim a requirement. An alternate approach is samples that have been recorded through a real amplifier. If you're not looking to create detailed guitar-centric masterpieces, but rather just throw in the occasional lick into a pop song or orchestrated movie music, an amped library can save time and simplify the process. For an example, take a look at Lyrical Distortion's Ripper Amped lib, which will set you back a mere 19 bucks. Though limited to a rather generic Mesa Boogie sound, it's usable and cheap. They also have $19 amped (Ampeg, of course) basses that are good for generic rock.

Kontakt 4 or 5, actually. K5 has not been the big seller NI had hoped for, so most third-party vendors are holding back and sticking with 3.5 or 4.2.

Yeah, I saw the new EG update is almost ready. I guess I'll jump on it when its finally hatched, and spring for Mind Control along with it. In the meanwhile I made 3 new purchases from 8dio. 8Dio Rhythmic Aura Vol. 1 is awesome [ http://8dio.com/?btp_product=rhythmic-aura-vol-1-acoustic ], and I'm downloading it now with Barbary Solo vocals. You guys have got to check out this 8dio stuff, its really over the top.

Hopefully, I should be pretty well prepared for EEG with my Komplete 8 Guitar Rig 5 Pro. I'm reaching the outer limits of what more I can or should be buying.

The EEG update appears to be imminent. Greg posted this on KVR today: Getting the final things ready to release the update: send out the emails, update the webpage, etc. Basically a bunch of writing. Sounds like the update is ready for primetime and could be released this week. If you haven't been following the thread, this will be a free update for current owners of EEG. It will require Kontakt 4.2 or higher, so do not get this update if you're running Kontakt 3.5.

I would say that sets you up pretty well software wise. I prefer Amplitube to Guitar rig, but both are excellent and will give you zillions of options with Strawberry. What sort of keyboard do you have? There are zones for strumming and chords, I think you would find any thing less than 49 keys a limitation. The mod wheel controls the chord voicings, the Roland type mod lever that springs back when released does not work too well with the Evolution guitars as you want it to stay in position (unless you have three hands ) My work around is to assign one of the sliders on my A800 to this task.

Listen to Greg's demos, which IIRC use Guitar Rig and sound pretty good. But because the updated EEG will now include an amp sim he's said that he'll be using that one for all future demos. BTW, my method for recording faux guitar leads is to use an outboard synthesizer that has some serviceable guitar patches. This allows for zero-latency monitoring while I record it as MIDI, which is subsequently reassigned to an instance of Kontakt. The only preparation I need is to make sure the pitch bend range matches the synth patch. Having an 88-key controller comes in handy when using libraries with keyswitches for selecting articulations.

[Any suggestions?] I really do need an 88 for some of the software I already have. I have a joystick on my Korg PA 500. I really should have separate pitch and mod wheels. My 61 key keystation has those, but I still lean towards getting an 88 note board.

I am not a piano player and like a light synth type action. At the moment I have a 61 key Cakewalk A800 and an old 61 key Roland XP10, (stuck on midi channel one). With keyswitch instruments one keyboard can be transposed to cover the keyswitches and the other covers the range of most things. I am sure the Roland is going to die soon and I am considering replacing it with mini keyboard for keyswitches, which will help as I have limited space. - here is Jordan Rudess using a mini board for key switching.

I'm the same way, Glyn, and not much into the weighted keys just from experience of never having them. The two keyboard senario is a great idea for me, Glyn. I'll try that route. Thanks for the idea!!! Maybe even a Korg Nano Kontrol may work.

Greg's among the very best there is. Read through the old posts on his support forum at kvr and you'll see the lengths he'll go to to help out a user. One-man cottage businesses have to be that way, it's their competitive edge over the much bigger players. Sean Costello (Valhalla), Alexey Vaneev (Voxengo) and Urs Heckmann (U-He) are other practitioners of that philosophy and all prime examples of how small-business customer relations are supposed to work.

Greg's been compiling a list of demo songs here, some by him, some by users. Here are some videos showing new features for strum and lead modes. I've actually never used the strum features (it's quicker to just use a real guitar for rhythm parts) but the video has inspired me to give them a go. Been watching them while waiting for the downloads to complete (one more to go!).

Well, as usual I'm a dimbulb. First I went and watched the strum video Bit linked to above and although I (sort of) got it my new EGS GUI doesn't look anything like the "old" one in the video or have as many options. I actually liked the arppegiator thingy as I understood it easily. I really can't make heads nor tails of this new thing. When I open up Kontakts keyboard at the bottom it shows I only have two strum keys at the lower end...C and C#...downstrokes and upstrokes I assume. So I goofed with the 4 controls showing when I select "strumming" and play some patterns. So far I haven't found anything near as realistic as the old arppegiator allowed me to do. Plus the Kontakt keyboard shows some highlighted keys way up the keyboard that...other than playing single notes...I can't figure what in heck they're supposed to do. I installed the new version in it's own new folder. Was I supposed to "overwrite" the old EGS folder or something? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This is where the fun begins. I need to learn everything. It may actually be easier for you than for those of us who are already familiar with the old product and now have to both un-learn and then re-learn. I've only had a chance to fiddle with the new version for a few minutes, and frittered most of that time away playing with the new effects. But one thing that made me do a double-take is there appears to only be one nki now, whereas the old version had dozens.
