Excellent Craig Anderton SoS article about the Browser... in case you haven't seen it...

Been trying to get more into using the Browser now that I'm whipping files around my system all the time. I've always kind of avoided the Browser because it was a little weird and confusing to me and I had other ways to get shiz done. Today I've been trying to learn about various ways to handle MIDI files (from my thread yesterday) and the Browser was one way that was recommended. The manual, as always, wasn't being as helpful as it could be so I started Googly Moogling about and stumbled across this article which wasn't DIRECTLY related to my quest but filled out my Browser knowledge quite well.

Check it out...

Just thought it might be helpful to others. It was for me.

Cheers... and thanks, Craig.

Glad you liked it, although based around X3 the info remains accurate. However there have been some additional browser improvements since then which have been very useful, like automatically including a folder for the project audio.

I'm using the browser more and more these days. Being able to create content locations is huge for me - instant access is something I always like :) The biggest remaining limitation is you can't browse items on external optical media. [Edit - actually, you can - see post #10 from Noel].

...like automatically including a folder for the project audio.

Could you elaborate? Not sure what this means.

One thing that I think would be useful is being able to create new folders within the Browser instead of having to leave Sonar.... however that may be what you are referring to OR it's just too skeevy, codewise, to have Sonar creating folders in this manner. But I guess Sonar does create folders all the time when saving so maybe it is possible.

Either way... helpful article. Always learnin' new stuff.

    Cheers.

There is a way to create a new folder in the browser by copying and pasting. The browser also lacks a rename function for folders but this can be done using the folder properties dialog. The browser needs to be refreshed after renaming this way.

So I could essentially keep an empty dummy folder somewhere specifically for this task and copy it whenever I want to "create" a folder in the Browser? Clever!

Haven't stumbled across the folder properties thing yet (this is accessible inside the Browser?) but I'm poking about so I'll see what I can find.

    Thanks, scook.

In version 8, the browser tab was at the bottom.

In X1 up to X3e, there is a bug whereby if you delete the Preview bus,
some samples work and some dont. It becomes unstable and can even hang Sonar if you preview the sounds too quickly.

Workaround is to select a different bus for previewing first, say Master, then delete the Preview bus, then save.

We have had rename from X3 I think. Right click on a file or folder and there is a rename option :)
You can also click F2 to rename, or click twice on the name.

I should be been more clear. I was working in the folder display because there is no way to create new folders other than copy/paste in the folder display. There is a rename in the file display which works with folders.

Not sure what you mean by external optical media. I can browse files from a DVD on my drive. What you may need to do is go to the browser preferences tab and in the views menu turn on "Show all files and folders"

OK we should probably dupe that option there.

    HA!

So this is how I just created a brand spankin' new folder in my Browser for something I need to do (which is yank a bunch of MIDI files from a project so I can drag them into a new project).

    1) Outside of Sonar I created a new folder on my C drive (under Cakewalk Content so it's easy to navigate to but location doesn't matter). I named it "Beeps Browser Blank" so I know it's mine and what it is at a glance.

    2) Inside Sonar I open the Browser (B), click the dropdown on the Media Tab and selected Folders (which shows the folder hierarchy section of the Browser).

At that point if I am looking at the regular Browser window and have navigated to Cakewalk Content I can see the new "Beeps Browser Blank" folder however in the Folders View window it was showing up. I collapsed the Content file tree, reopened it and it refreshed it so I could now see the new folder. Great!

    3) In the Folders Browser view I selected the "Beeps Browser Blank" folder, right clicked and there was a "Copy" option (there is no Copy option in the main Browser window).

    4) I selected the main Cakewalk Content folder (but could have selected any folder on my system), right clicked, selected paste... Bingo Bango... I have a copy of the "Beeps Browser Blank" with the tag "-copy".

    5) Then in the main Browser window (not the Folders view) I selected the "Beeps Browser Blank" copy, Right Click and there is a rename option... so I chose that and renamed it to what I wanted. Also F2 worked.

NOTE: There is no rename option in the Folders View nor does F2 allow you to rename the folder. It has to be in the main Browser window.
However in the Folders view window you can do exactly what scook described. Select the folder, Right Click, select Properties. Then you can rename the folder in the folder Properties dialog.

    Cool!

Although I have figured this out based on Craig's article and scook's and Noel's posts it does strike me that there is a lot of separation between the creation/renaming options in the Folders view and the Main Browser window. Like I have to kind of jump back and forth a little between the windows to get the Right Click options I wanted to perform the function.

So yeah... if Copy/Paste/Rename were available on BOTH sides of that Browser divider it would be much more inuitive.

Awesome thread though. This is super helpful stuff.

    Thanks, guys.

PS: The option to create a new folder inside the Browser would be great too... if at all possible.

Wow Noel, you're right. Thanks for making me feel stupid

Is there are chance that an update overwrites the preference for "show all files and folders"? I always thought I had that checked.

It appears Folders and "Show All Files and Folders" settings are not persistent. They reset to off every session.

BTW Steve, has Cakewalk finished the "Scook Brain Dump" module to replace the current documentation? Or is that still under development?
