Expansion packs for Sound Center for 20 smakers (each)
Just got an email today: Steinway Grand Piano, Vintage Keys Expansion Packs for Sound Center these look pretty good. I don't use soundcenter for anything yet, but for 20 bucks each they look very tempting. I'm very curious how 'usable' that Steinway grand is. here's a link to them in the estore: http://www.store.cakewalk.com/b2cus/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=10-DSSP1.00-20E for the steiny grand there are links from there to the other 2 available expansion packs, World Instruments and Vintage Keyboards (which are also tempting for $20!)

That looks cool..... why no sound samples? I'd lake to hear it and the other 2 packs looked interesting as well..... actually the world samples looked interesting. For $20 each... I might have to buy some candy from the candy store. Can't go too wrong for $20 each. EDIT: Tried to place the order, I think something screwed up... had to email customer service to see if it was placed or not.

I agree that this looks like an excellent expansion, I also wish there were some sound samples to preview. A key point I also wonder about, is whether or not this works in either version of Sound Center, since the newer update to MC5 switched up to Sound Center 2, which was not downward compatible and made you pull up all older Sound Center tracks and go through an update process. (This actually affected me drastically). Let me know if/when either of you receive and try these, but I'm betting I'll go in at least for the Steinway, maybe the whole set.

I'm sure it does.... it would probably have a notice of upgrade required...... I would hope. I'll check the order status later..... I'm thinking it didn't go through cause I didn't get a confirm email.

that is a good question, John, but I'd be surprised if they didn't take that into consideration. I too would like some samples, but samples are almost always misleading, IMO. you still have to take them for what they are. I doubt I'll get the piano, I just bought Kontakt Classic Piano set. well, I just bought a tubed rhodes, too, so I'm not sure I need the vintage keys either, but I might get it anyway just to play with it. and maybe the world. IDK. does this mean I have too much money or too little sense?

HaHaHa Herb, sounds like you hit a bad day for ordering - I've decided to go for it, but will wait till tomorrow since I'm planning a late night here installing other things.... by the way I upgraded to Win 7 Pro x64 and am slowly, carefully, loading up one itty bitty thing at a time..... call me paranoid! haha but so far, so good!

Technical correction to my earlier note above, I did not have my DAW in front of me then, but I do believe that the current Sound Center version is not 2.0, but it is 1.1 - this was introduced with the MC5 update of 5.0.5 and we now have 5.0.6. It upgraded the Sound Center from 1.0 to 1.1, and is not backward compatible. I just wanted to be clear so as not to lead anyone astray. Thanks

haha John, funny man!!! I have bought upgrade parts to upgrade my current system to win7x64. I've installed a new SATA II card and 8G RAM and I'm waiting on the new hard drives to arrive before I install win7 on one of them (the other is for audio). I plan to make a dual boot system at first as I continue to build up the win7x64 system until I'm happy with it and not chicken enough to let go of the winxp system! on cakewalk soundcenter - where did you find the version number? I can't find it on mine. pressing F1 brings up a help file, but not splash dialog with the version information that I can find.

Reese you're taking the safe route HaHa and I can't blame you for being reluctant on the move! I studied this long and hard before I took the plunge. Regarding the SoundCenter version, you're right, I don't see it displayed inside the software, but I am going by the CW document called "Supplementary Information and Release Notes for the Music Creator 5.0.5 and Sound Center 1.1 update". In the front page of this doc, it lists that the MC 5.0.5 updates the Sound Center from 1.0 to 1.1.

did they charge you for the purchase? I still haven't bought any of them. it's an excellent price, but I'm not sure I really need any of them. if I don't use them in a project then I feel like I've wasted the money. john - YES I'm chicken!!!

I'm going to give the ordering a shot later this afternoon. Right now I'm actually using MC5.0.5.6 in Win7 x64, all is going well and quite stable. I managed to crash MC5 a couple times due to trying to monkey with my ASIO panel to adjust latency, but that's on me. I seem to have very little variance in the range needed to reduce/avoid cracks and pops. Wish there was more detail on how to test your latency and how to adjust it. With my Edirol USB 4FX box, the ASIO control panel seems to give me only a single slider control and it sure doesnt' seem to accept much varience from the defauly middle setting. I don't even see the little numbers of actual latency to tell what 'm currently at. Can anyone advise? Should I even consider testing using one of the other drivers? I'm using Edirol's x64 driver, so it's very stable, but i do seem to get some ocassional pops so far in my tests. CPU percentage is like, nil. Less than 12% with a dozen audio tracks or more. I am purposely pulling up each old project song and of course I used the SoundCenter 1.0 extensively, so am making those adjustments to the new version. So far not a hitch and I am proceeding slowly. I am adding in minimal VSTs that I know, like, used stable, and trust. Also so far not a hitch. You're shaking your head at my beginning with MC5, when I have Sonar PE 8.5.3, but I still fully intend to use both until/unless I get to a point where I can work in Sonar's interface as quickly as MC5. My currently successful process involves using MC5 to "track", and ultimately bring over to Sonar to polish. For me it's faster. Being careful to save different versions cause I can't safely go back to MC5 from a saved Sonar project without introducing some errors. Bottom line is, after many months of experimenting, I have a process that's working for my needs. By later today I'll be loading up my Sonar in x64 mode. That'll be fun.... Truthfully, I am still amazed at the quality of MC5 as well as the CW SI package, for the cost. CW truly accomplished a marvel there in these two quality pkgs. If this expansion pack deal is for real, I'm going to add it into the mix (no pun intended!). Upgrades from hell.... well we've all been though THOSE huh! I've had my DAW down since basically Christmas but I didn't rush myself with a deadline - and my jobs been very demanding of time anyway. Yet I feel very excited because of the combination of a new loadup and hardware, as well as new levels of things I've learned from research both on and off of this forum. I'm one happy camper, thanks to CW and all of you!

the latency buffers for ASIO mode are up to the manufacturer of the soundcard drivers and doesn't have anything to do with cake specifically. that's why they vary on how to set them from soundcard to soundcard. you can, however, see what you're settings do if you go to OPTIONS>AUDIO and look at the reported latency after you've made a change. that window doesn't get updated as soon as you make a change, tho, it queries the system each time the window is called, so you have to close the window and reopen it if you want to see your changes. you can do a real round trip latency test if you want using cables plugged from your soundcard inputs to your soundcard outputs. a test like that will give you exact round trip latency in samples. however, for MC that doesn't really help you because you can't adjust to that level, I don't think. I think you have to use sonar to adjust manual offset.

I got my order in, and confirmed - I also got Steinway and World. Waiting the estimated 15 minutes now, before the codes are available. The server doesn't like IE 8 security and it took numerous tries to get it to take the shipping screen before I even got to the credit card screen. After that, all went well. So far.... HaHa The only confidence I have is that it's the actual CW online ordering, and not some fly-by-night web dot com outfit. They popped up my entire registration history and license codes for me, and I quickly did a screen capture for my records. Wow, I didn't know I've ordered that many CW products over the past few years! I laughed when it listed on top, "Your next upgrade is: Sonar X-1 PE" !! Ha! Let me figure out how to use Sonar 8.5 first, okey dokey? hehehe Hey seriously, this was a great deal. Thanks for bringing it to light!!

Hmmm I was able to download them both, unzip them, and the installation of each (a single setup file) went fine. MC5 pulled each one up just fine as an additional capability in the SoundCenter instruments. But I have not yet been able to get my registration numbers so far due to server error at their end. Wonder why they worked.... ? I assume that at some point maybe the 3rd or 4th usage, I'll get prompted for my numbers. I'll check back on that until I can get through - but already I can tell you from playing around with the Steinway settings... whew! What a sound!! An awesome new addition to the MC SoundCenter!! I whole-heartedly applaud this deal - an awesome bang for the buck!

Glad it's working for you John.... I DL to my desk..... unzipped them, copied to the zip drive and installed them using the installer in the file folder...... maybe I'll copy the whole DL to the zip and go from there. I don't know that I have a zipper on my DAW. Opened a new project...loaded SC.... and could not get them to work..... I can't even find the Steinway.... the world files are there but they don't play. Hummmmmmmmm. I didn't spend too much time with it... thought it should load and work but it didn't so now I have to dig in and see what's happening....or not happening. OK on the DAW I load the project and try to open a world sound.... IDS_GENERIC_ERROR not found in text resource file I can see the world instruments but they don't play... I have no idea where the steinway is.... I saw them both load...

The upgrade appears to work..... I have the grand working. now installing world' edit to add: I think it's working now.... BUT it's not showing me the WORLD photo in the picture window..... I gues that's what was throwing me off..... previously when it wasn't working it did show the right photo. NOPE that ain't it. The steinway has 3 stars on the new additions. The world...all of it is still missing.... It's in the folder.... SC just doesn't see it and I don't know how to tell it where to look..... duhhhhhh! In the first version that didn't play they were shown in the OTHER field.

I open the world pdf and see a fantastic list of cool stuff..... I just can't get it to show up in MC's SC. When I go looking in c:\program files\cakewalk\vstplugins\cakewalk sound center\modules\multisamples\dimension pro I have all the working sounds in folders at the top...apparently when the upgrade was applied I got a bunch of new sounds in the default SC...... at the bottom of the screen is all the new WORLD sound files..... stuff like Djembe.sfz , jaw harp.sfz and so on..... OK.... I'm stumped...and tired.... so time to call it a night....shower and bed..... try tomorrow.

Herb, sorry you're not able to get it yet, and I am also not all the way there yet but, only cause I had to drop it all and go visit a relative in the hospital. So far, it looks like it DOES need the MC5/SC1.1 update, but honestly I saw nothing anywhere that said it did. So, I had that installed and in place first, the latest version being 5.0.5.6 The downloads went well, the installations went well using default paths. Herb it sounds like you see the same screens I do, with the new sounds listed with various stars.... as I go through and select them, I am actually able to hear and use them. My next step is to go back and get my reg. numbers since the server had issues yesterday. But I won't know where to put them in until I get prompted someplace. Bottom line seems to be, this upgrade has some quirks to it. Surprising, given the source of the downloads and the quality of the samples. Let's hang in there and slowly take this apart. I promise I'll give it more time later today and report back as well. Hope we can all get on board with this deal and get the installation worked out!

John, I got the Steinway working...quite a nice collection f tweekable sounds. My continuing issue is with trying to get the World sounds working. After I have lunch I'll very likely speand some time with it. I did allow it to install on default paths. I also went and upgraded MC5 which also upgraded SC to the latest version. This gave me a whole bunch of new default sounds in SC that was not there before. I see the new piano's. BEFORE I did the upgrade, all of the new WORLD instruments were showing up in SC in the very last thing down...."OTHER"...and I had the complete list of WORLD instruments there..... but I get the error message I described earlier in this thread. After the upgrade, the piano's work but WORLD is nowhere to be found. I did a reinstall of the WORLD instrument pack and I tracked it down.....I found the files, but they don't show up in SC anywhere, and I see no way to tell SC to go look for them. I even ran a plug in scan thinking that might be the issue. So I'll did in later this afternoon to try to solve this.....It's probably something simple that I'm missing. So..... what do you have working or not working in your rig with this 2 pack install?

Well for an example Herb, when I open a new project in MC5, go to insert Synth and open SoundCenter, and select Single Track Instrument, I AM able to go to the "Other" selection on the left panel, and then see and access all of the "World" instruments on the right panel, with a bunch of percs and the list ends in World Harps 1 and 2. I don't know yet if we're supposed to be able to access them under other different settings, I'm gonna need more time to run through tests but I'm out now on errands until fairly late tonight (I'm off tomorrow though). I'm going to be at this through late tonight and then hopefully finish the rest of my various installations tomorrow. I'll post anything else I can learn; meanwhile I had to email customer support regarding my S/N and reg numbers for these two packages, because the page shows my order number and the titles but no nmbers for registration. Thatl'l prob be a couple days till I hear back from them.

Do these even have serial numbers? They are add on music packs as opposed to a synth unto themselves. I've seen no reg numbers either or anywhere to punch them in. All the other synths I've gotten from Cake, the numbers all came in the email and they showed up in the store. The store shows I bought the packs but no numbers up top. I don't think they need reg numbers or serial numbers. BTW: I never did fire up the DAW to work on this...I had something else I worked on for a short time..... one of those "non-motivated" sessions......

Herb, I believe you are correct in that these two add-ins are not going to have/need serial or registration numbers. I got an automated email from suppport saying they received my request for that info, but when I do get the response I'm betting it'll be that there is no need for numbers. OTHER issues - I am testing further, and only this morning did I finally install EZDrummer. Remember this is Win 7 64-bit here; I used Toontrack's 64-bit update, rather than the jbridge that I bought in case it didn't work.... well so far EZD comes up and acts correctly, but soon as I drag-n-drop a midi clip to a track, it won't allow clip looping (Ctl-L function) nor can I dbl-click on the clip to go to MIDI edit mode. So there's something afoot there all right. I'm going to either create a new thread for detailed solutions on the EZD x64 issue, or go locate another thread that I think is already out there; it doesn't belong right here with this Steinway add-on item. Just saying, in additon to the new plug-ins, I've found other issues and I do not want to go further and install my Sonar 8.5 PE yet until I resolve the lower end platform issues. Yet MC5 itself, runnning in compatiblity mode, seems to be working like a champ. I'll pop back in later today and see if anyone else is also struggling with Win7 64 bit issues. But as far as these two new plugins Steinway and World, they seem to work great. I just have not done an actual test in DnD and editing mode with them yet; that will be benefitial and I'll do that test shortly.

Guitarhacker OK cake sent me some things to do.... update MC5.... already did that..... Initialize the samples ...did that... still not working.....told them that...wait again. Herb I just noticed your reply here and wondered if you still were having any problems with your two new plug-ins (Steinway and World). I broke away from this thread which began about only those two plug-ins, and I opened up a new one for issues with Win 7 64-bit, MC5 running on it, and EZD on 64-bit. Bottom line is, all my issues were solved by reinstalling MC5 in its 5.0.5 update. It fixed a glitch I had in which the plug-ins were there but would not drag and drop properly into a MIDI track. Once I reinstalled, I did a lot of tests using newly-created project files, and I was able to do all functions properly. I added that I am running EZD without jbridge, using only EZD's 64-bit update patch. And it works great. But I don't think you use EZDrummer, you're just focusing on the MC5 and newer SC, with these 2 new instrument downloads, correct? I have stlil not heard back from CW email support, regarding confirmation on whether I should have received any Lic or Reg numbers from that order, but it seems apparent that we do not need anything. Let me know if I can help you any further in getting things to work on your end. Both my Steinway piano and World sounds now perform correctly, including actually dropping them into MIDI tracks in a test project. I had made maximum use of a wonderful long holiday weekend to load up the new Win 7 x64 notebook I had bought way back at Christmas; now I have MC5 working, EZD, and numerous tried-n-true plugins that I enjoyed using before. Having tested everything now, I am poised for the next big installation - my Sonar PE 8.5.3. I'm waiting for a good chunk of time on that since it also involves all those nifty add-ons that came with the 4 DVD set. Probably gonna be this weekend. Meanwhile, for the collection of song projects I had in the older MC5 format with the older SoundCenter, I have begun bringing them up one by one and re-selecting the tracks that used SC1.0, and saving them in SC1.1 format. So far, that has also gone very well. By the way, that generic error you got - I have also seen, and it seems to always mean that there's one more track with a setting in the old SC format, that has not yet been re-selected. In one of my songs I really had to dig through my "Archive Folder" of all the muted SC tracks, to locate it and get it converted. It was made more dificult because I love to rename the track title and icon, from its default and I usually don't call it "SC" something, usually just an instrument name. Maybe you'll find you did something similar. Anyways, once I found that last missing track in older SC and updated it, then I didn't get that error screen anymore. Good luck, it's tedious but once there it sure is smooth sailing.
