Export Function Quit Working

Hey all,

I have been successfully Exporting my finished music to .mp3 format (purchased the add-on) fine for a couple of months. I recently upgraded to the 4.0.3 maintenance release and installed the Waves Platinum bundle of plugins on my computer.

I cannot Export music at all now. When I try and Export into any format, the resulting file is either a 2K file which has no music in it at all or Sonar just quits altogether and disappears from my screen. I have to re-open the file again then.

So bottom line, the previously highly restrictive and confusing Export function is now non-functional altogether.

What do I do? Anyone see this before?

Update, OK so other cuts can still Export so it has to be something specific to this cut. I am able to export individual tracks, in fact all of them....it is just the final mix of only this cut which causes SONAR to exit when I try an Export. But I cannot find what it is I did to this track to cause this and I hope that my normal.cwt template does not have this mistake in it!!

    RANT:

Why can't we export to a generic .wav file? Why do we have to pay extra for the .mp3 feature? Is the industry afraid we are going to steal our own music? I don't want to use Real Player .rm because Real Player takes over the whole system when you install it and I cannot afford the automatic tampering with potential failure points that this package does. Windows Media Player, half the time does not recognize its own .wma files. The other three formats don't appear to be compatible with ANYTHING so I am not sure what they are.

The export feature is probably the LONE feature of SONAR which is inferior to Sony Acid Music and others of the lower cost ilk.

    Hi, Dodger,

Hey, you *can* export to a generic .wav file. That's what I always do. Then, if I want an .mp3, I use CDex (free!) and convert to .mp3. Simple.

Hey M thanks for the response. That's encouraging. I have been exporting .wma files and then having Sound Forge 7.0 convert them to .mp3 so getting that is not a problem. I have not been able to get Broadcast Wav Exports to be recognized by any external software. Yes the file end in .wav but here is the list of software that does not recognize broadcast wav for me:

Windows Media Player 10 (Media not recognized)
Sony Sound Forge 7.0 (Unsupported Media Format - and Sound Forge opens almost everything...)
Nero 6.0 (not a valid sound file)
Sony Acid Pro (file format not compatible)

Regarding my original problem.....is there a fix for the myriad number of failures I am experiencing with the Export function? (other than being very limited on export formats)?

    Thanks

I have not been able to get Broadcast Wav Exports to be recognized by any external software.

Ah, that's the problem, it's called "RIFF Wave" --- it probably should be named something more recognizable --- Broadcast Wave is a whole different horse of another color. But I think it is explained in the Export Help.

Make sure you don't have a small potion of the timeline selected accidentally before you export. If you have a region selected before you do the export, only that region will be exported. I've been burned on this a few times where I've had a clip or some small time region selected that I didn't notice.

    Sorry, I didn't have a cure for the original issue, so I didn't offer one. . .

Regarding playing your finished .wav files - be aware that many players, etc., only want to see typical CD .wavs -- i.e. 44.1 KHz, 16-bit. If you're mixing at higher resolutions, many consumer-level players won't play them. Also, as dcastle points out, the broadcast .wavs have additional timing cues in them, compared to the RIFF .wavs. Mix to RIFF at 44.1 KHz / 16-bit, and your Media Player should play it, no problem.

several things to keep in mind when exporting.

What is selected? Nothing selected means nothing in the exported file.
What bit depth are you asking for? 24 bit export will be incompatible with many intended destinations.
Do you know what each audio file type really means. They are not all obvious.

Windows Media Player doesn't support 24bit audio.
