Export / Render sounds bassy

I'm having a concern about exports/ renders done in X1... x1b...

When I'm mixing down, I go through my Maudio OUT to KRK Rokit 6's (nearfield setup).   The sound is fairly crisp like I like it... BUT when I play what I have exported back through a car stereo or even through another computer (ie - cheap speakers) it sounds real bassy and I've lost some of the crispness of my highs.

I have to keep tweeking the bass guitar down and it sounds extremely faint in the krk's but is boomy everywhere else...

Thanks

My take on this is, different speakers different settings and different outcomes.

    Hi Travismc1,
It sounds like you may be having classic problems with room acoustics and mix portability.  If that's a new topic for you I'd start here:

Welcome to the real world! :o)
It can take a year or two and hundreds of text mixes untill you really learn how you have to mix to make it sound good on any equipment.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

This isn't X1, this is your listening / monitoring environment.

You're using tiny monitors, which means that you're likely going to overcompensate for the bass. On top of that, looking at your picture, you're in a square room that doesn't have any tuning. Your mixes aren't going to travel well. This was my my plague for many years, until I learned about tuning.

This is a massive topic and I wish you well in your learning endeavors. To assist, I have provided some information below.

A lot of people will tell you that you can build these yourself for cheaper and I'm sure you can. I'd rather use quality products already made, then create garbage that works only decently (I'm no handy man and I don't have a shop to build things).

    http://www.atsacoustics.c...ustic-Panels--100.html

These panels work fairly good and are relatively inexpensive. I have 2 of the 4" deep panels behind my monitors, mounted 2" off the wall for better low absorption.

These are amazing, but expensive. I Just loaded up my studio with some of there gear.

The following points are the main issues in studios:

    • First order reflections (from monitors to front wall, back to you. Side wall reflections jacking up your stereo image. Ceiling reflections)
    • Rear reflections should be diffused.
    • Bass traps are needed in all corners (or as much as possible )
    • Rectangular rooms have bass node issues, based on the dimensions. See http://www.marktaw.com/re...StandingWaveCalcu.html for an easy calculation.
I highly recommend getting a SPL meter and mapping out the frequency problems at your listening position. It will be enlightening and empowering to know where your environment is no good.

Here are a couple pics of my studio room. I still have a lot of work to do, mainly trapping my corners. But hopefully this helps. I've been working on tuning my room for over a year. It's a journey - specially if you're not crafty or high rollin ;)

    Forgot to mention:

Since you likely can't fix your studio quickly, I highly recommend investing in a quality pair of headphones to assist with your bass frequency mixing. In general, mixing on headphones isn't a great idea, but it can really help with clearly hearing the bass frequencies.

Your other saving grace will be to listen to how other songs (with great bass) sound through the headphones and trying to make your track have a similar presence.

Don't get too discouraged, it is fixable, but it takes time, money, and education.

+1 to the RealTraps site for education. For being free, it certainly rocks.

The one thing you can do to prove to yourself that it's not Sonar causing the apparent problem is this: when you've done your Export - Import back into Sonar and listen to it.

You should hear no difference between the 2 mixes. If you do, you have a problem with your Export settings.

Just make sure you bypass any master bus effects on the Import as you'll be duplicating the processing

To quote mastering guru Bob Ludwig: "The vast majority of EQ that we do in mastering is to compensate for the errors in the mix engineer's playback system."

And in this context the term "system" includes the room you're in. If it's a small room, it's a given that what you hear will never be accurate. Steps can be taken to improve it, but you can never truly level the bass response in a small room no matter what you do. Just ask forum member spindlebox, who's turned it into his life's mission.

All is not hopeless, though. Don't be afraid to use visual aids such as Voxengo SPAN to help you see what you cannot hear.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Also, listen to other (professionally done) music thru your mixing system, this will help tune your ears to your environment.
