Export seems to take forever in X1 compared earlier Sonars

Export seems to take forever in X1 compared earlier Sonars

Exporting to a 16bit 44.1 wav with no dither seems to take forever.

I have
9 instances of ReFX nexus [32bit via BitBridge]
1 instance of SI P-bass
2 instances of Kontakt4 loaded with OTS EEG [x64]
1 instance of Kontakt4 running Abbey Road 80s drums [x64]
1 instance of Kontakt4 running 2 saxaphone instruments [x64]
2 instances of Battery3 with various custom perc sounds [x64]
2 tracks of vocals
1 track of real bass
various reverbs/eqs/comps
3 instances of Guitar Rig Pro [x64]

For some reason both Fast Bounce and Audible Bounce are greyed out (I can't select them)

The project plays for 4minutes and 12seconds or so but takes the best part of 20minutes to print to a wav.

In previous versions of Sonar this print would've taken 2 minutes tops.......

Any ideas why X1 is so slow at printing to wav?
And why Fast Bounce and Audible Bounce might not be selectable?

That was something people were pointing out when X1 first came out, and as I recall, Cakewalk acknowledged that there was a problem with export--But the solution seems to be for the control bar to be off screen while you export.  Try that.

What state are they in? Audible Bounce and Live Input will be grayed out if Fast Bouce is selected, because they are obviously incompatible with Fast Bounce, but I don't know of any condition offhand that will make Fast Bounce unavailable.

One thing that probably won't resolve this issue, but may speed up bounces in general, is to set BounceBufSizeMsec= parameter in AUD,INI to something between 20 and 200. It's 0 by default, which causes SONAR to use the buffer size you're using for real-time playback, which may not be ideal for Fast Bounce if it's low, and can even cause bounce/export failures with some synths at very low settings (e.g. less than 128 samples). Setting BounceBufSizeMsec higher makes Fast Bounce more efficient and less prone to errors. Going too high can cause trouble in a big project because larger buffers use more RAM, but my understanding is that anything under 300 is reasonable.

But then you won't be able to see the progress bar....so how will you know when it's finished?

That's a very good question.  I dunno.  But I'm pretty sure that's the work around that people were posting - turn off the control bar.  That indicates something is Very Wrong with the CB.

Why the progress bar was moved and confined to that one little window is beyond me.  Some things that have become standard in programs, like the full width bottom-of-the-screen progress bar, become standard because they are functional and efficient.   Very arbitrary to re-do that, a pointless change.

Maybe people with more actual experience with recording in X1 can help you out with this Twig - X1 is still just a curiosity piece for me, and I poke at it once in awhile.  In its current form, it has some of the fascination that a car wreck does - I don't want to keep looking, but I do--once in awhile.

Meanwhile, I got me speedy exports et al in good ol 8.5.

A progress bar will appear. Give it a try.

Edit | Preferences | Config File
    Check the value of BounceBufSizeMsec
It should be 0 by default. If not change it to 0 to default to the playback buffer size. If set low it will make bounces run slower.

This was documented in the X1A readme if I remember right.

Noel, is this recommendation specific to X1 or is it general advice for older versions as well? Is it still OK or desirable to set it to a larger value than the playback buffer?

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

It is specific to X1.  We fixed the issue in X1a, but the patch does not override the aud.ini setting.  For anyone following along if you need a step by step check out: http://www.cakewalk.com/S...reader.aspx/2007013213

An observation I have made is if a "song" has audiosnap used on various tracks then the export turns into a long winded affair as Sonar has to deal with the audiosnapped tracks prior to export - it can sit there for a while with the progress bar going across, starting again etc.
It finally will export the track but the delay takes some getting used to.

The setting actually applies to all versions of SONAR. The part thats specific to X1 is that there was a bug in the prefs dialog that was accidentally setting the value to the latency. As a result it would stick there at the last set value. By default it should be left at 0 which means "follow playback buffer size".
Setting it to something like 20 or higher will make bounces run faster since it processes fewer buffers that way and there is less low latency overhead.

Thanks for the post, Noel - I'm probably being thick, but for me there's still confusion over what to do, since the info seems contradictory.  You're saying the default should be left at 0 - but you're also saying to set it at 20 or higher since that makes bounces faster. --- ?  I'm left not knowing which setting I should be using.

Yeah I'm confused now too...first it should be 0 then it should be set to >=20......so which is it?

All I know mine was set to 11 somehow which was causing my problems.
I haven't actually needed to export since posting this thread so don't know if 0 works better or not.

No problem with long processing time for me. My issue is cracks, pops and noise. I've tried every combination and ended up using audio grabber to make mp3s. :(
