Exported wav volume vs. in project volume

It seems that when I am in my project and mix volume(s) for everything is just right.  Nothing on the buses indicating any issues.
Then I export to wav pull up the file in Windows Media Player and the volume of the wave is ear shattering.

I would have thought the the wav volume and the project volume would be the same.

Checked the Windows mixer control...nothing out of the ordinary there.....Can someone tell me how to calibrate sonar volume and the windows media player volume to be the same.

First, are Sonar and WMP playing out the same device? That would be the first place to start the calibration. Is Sonar using ASIO?

Get a sine wave.  Softsynths are good sources, or google around for one.  Turn your monitors down, load the sine into Sonar and play it. Turn up the monitors a bit so you can hear it--but not loud.  Now export the Sine from Sonar.

Load the sine you exported from Sonar into Windows Media Player and play it. Now you can start to figure out where any loudness discrepancies are.  Without knowing more detail about your setup, I'm not sure how to proceed, but that should get you started. Sine waves, and pink noise are the main calibration sounds.

    Thanks for the reply.
Yes both are on the same box.
    Yes Sonar is using ASIO.
I have done the sine wave exactly as you specified and found that WMP has to be set at 50% to match the loudness of Sonar.

    Thanks for the feedback
