i have no way of telling what the problem is, give a little more information. What kind of song, does it have midi tracks? if all audio is it MP3 or wave? Details help.

Robomusic left, but maybe I can help. MIDI through a software synthesizer is not audio in the conventional sense, so you have to convert the MIDI/soft synth to an audio track before you can export it.
Do this: Click the MIDI track(s) where the track number is; it should turn green. Now hold down the Ctrl (control) button on your computer keyboard and click on the soft synth track so it also turns green. Then release the Ctrl button and at the top click 'Edit>Bounce to Track'. An options dialog will appear; the defaults will probably do, so click OK. The MIDI tracks will then be mixed down to an audio track.
When that's done, click the audio track and do the export thing.

I think I have a related problem, but your suggestion did not work for me. I am trying to burn my song on to a CD. I have 6 audio tracks and 2 midi tracks in the song. I was trying to bounce the midi tracks to the audio tracks as required using your suggestion 57Gregy but it did not work.

The error said "The specified selection did not contain any audio data. Please ensure that the selection contains the audio data you wish to bounce."

    Any other suggestions?

    thanks.

Do you have a soft synth inserted? I guess if you can HEAR the midi, you do. (If not, you'll need to do that.) Anyway, try again to select the midi track AND the synth track. Sometimes it doesn't work the first time.

You need to solo the tracks and the audio output of the synth to bounce a single track, do this with each track.

As long as you have at least ONE audio track in a project, you can export to audio without bouncing anything to anywhere. I do it all the time...

First..select the audio track by clicking on it ...then .... FILE>EXPORT>AUDIO.... in the new window that opens, choose a destination that you can find again easily, then in the little PRESET window..select "what you hear" and click OK... Cake processes the tracks and exports a wave file that is exactly "what you hear" on playback.

Jeff, if you're not using a software synthesizer then you are probably using either the Microsoft GS Wavetable synth or the synth in a MIDI keyboard. It's not easy converting the MS Wavetable to audio (no one's ever explained why, I just accept that it's difficult, and it's sound sucks anyway), and impossible when using an external synth because the conversion takes place inside the computer and the MIDI keyboard is outside the computer.
Which synth is making your MIDI sounds determines how to convert it to audio. If you're using the MS Wavetable synth, I suggest you learn to use soft synths, 1. because they sound so much better and 2. they're so much easier to convert. If you're using a MIDI keyboard to make your MIDI sounds and like the way it sounds, then you need to connect a stereo audio cord from the keyboard's audio/headphone output to your sound card's stereo line-in and record the MIDI keyboard's sound to an audio track in MC. A method I use often.

Thanks everyone for your help! It sounds like I'm listening to Charlie Brown's teacher! Waaa waaa waaa! (it sucks being on the bottom end of the learning curve!)

I can hear my midi tracks but I do not think I used "soft synths" to record them. I used Drum map manager for the drum track and created my drum pattern using that. I am also using the MS Wavetable synth.

I understand that I should use "soft synths" in cakewalk but I am not sure how I do that. Does that mean I have to redo my drum and bass tracks as a soft synth or do I just need to have them play using that method or device? Either way, any starting pointers would be appreciated. I think I have a half decent song too, so it's hard to be slowed down at this late stage in the process.

You don't need to redo the tracks..... go to my website www.herbhartley.com and navigate to my music pages... take your time when you get there...follow the steps one at a time...I explain in plain language how to start a new project and insert TTS and then play 3 tracks of midi with different instruments on each track.

Take your time and soon you will be comfortable with this whole thing.

The drum maps are templates for writing drum tracks, but once you finish writing it, 'Insert>Soft Synth>TTS-1' and change the track's output from Drum Map to TTS-1 and select the Preset Rhythm setting in TTS-1.

Jeff, after you've successfully loaded TTS-1 and changed your MIDI track's output to the soft synth, your track pane should look something like this. Click on the 'Bank' drop-down arrow to see the presets.
