Exporting a selection of the song as MIDI file

Hello everyone,
How can I export a selection of the song as MIDI file ?
Every time I select the desired portion of the song (eg from second 10 to second 20) to export as MIDI, SONAR exports the whole song.

Thanks in advance

To only export a portion, you would highlight the timeline that you want exported and select the tracks that you want.

If its audio, you cant export it to MIDI. Only MIDI data can be exported to MIDI as a wrk file (i think)
You can convert audio to midi with v-vocal or audio snap, before exporting.

My song is MIDI only. I did highlight the timeline and selected the tracks. But SONAR exports the whole song every time I click the SAVE AS...

"Save As" is not exporting a song. your confusing these terms. Exporting and save as are 2 different functions

To do a save as for only the section you want, you would delete everything you do not want saved and then do the save as and re-name the project. This will save everything that's in the project

Like i said in post #2 - To only export a portion, you would highlight the timeline that you want exported and select the tracks that you want.

If everyhting is greyed out, then your not selecting all the correct tracks for the midi and soft synths.

Then your not selecting all the required tracks. You need to select the audio track that is outputting the midi data, the midi track and the track folder, if applicable.

I would recommend that you go through the manual and read up on exporitng. This way you'll understand a bit more.

I export to (Sonar calls it save as) midi regularly and often I only want part of my projects, especially for lead sheets and such. Sonar saves the whole enchilada to midi, selecting parts doesn't help.

Here is what I do, plan A and plan B. Maybe one will help you.

Plan A, highlight what you want, copy it, open a new sonar project, paste and save as a midi file. Voila!

Plan B, (sort of a pain but I'm used to it so it goes quickly): first save my project one last time. Because then, I have to cut away anything that I Don't want to export. In other words, delete everything you don't want in the midi file (midi data that is, all the audio plugin stuff and busses won't ever go to midi anyway. Audio/synth tracks will, though, even though they are empty tracks in midi land. Go figure.) As mentioned, selection doesn't seem to work, cut out everything that you don't want. Then save what's left as a midi file. (That's why I make sure I save the sonar project before I start gutting it, call me conscientious.)

I recommend saving as midi format 1.

Update for X1, I just found an alternative way to export midi, although it has limitations. You can drag a midi clip to the desktop or to a folder and it becomes a midi file. If you drag multiple clips, each clip becomes its own midi file, so if you want to include multiple clips worth of stuff in a single midi file, or just a selection from a clip (or clips), first bounce the selection to a new clip, then drag that new clip to a folder (desktop).

A limitation of this method is you can't export multiple tracks to a midi format 1 file, where each track in Sonar becomes a track in the midi file. For midi format 1 with multiple tracks, you still have to save as midi, after first removing all track data that you don't want to be in the midi file (my previous post).
