External Insert - not working on busses

I'm just starting to get my system expanded and set up enough to start using hardware processors during mixes.  I just got a new compressor today that I think will sound great on kick drum.  Problem is, when I put it across the kick drum bus and set the outputs, no sound left my interface.  When I dragged the external insert over to one of the kick drum tracks (3 tracks blended for the final kick sound) - viola! kick drum through the compressor.  Drag it back to the bus - same settings, but no sound.

If I set the bus output directly to the desired interface output, it comes out.  It's just the output of the external insert that seems not to find its way out.

Anyone else have this issue with external inserts on busses?

My interface is a Focusrite Saffire Pro 26 i/o

Hi sethmopod,
Hmmm...that's strange. When you have the E.I. on a bus and there is no sound does it begin to make sound once you bypass the E.I. plug?

Razorwit - Yes.  It makes sound when I bypass the plug.  That is - in this case, the 'kick' bus (which has its output set to the 'Drums' bus) sends no sound to anywhere when the E.I. plug is engaged.  When I bypass the plug, it resumes sending sound to the 'Drums' bus.

What I can't get is the 'Kick' bus to show up on outputs 7/8 of my soundcard through the E.I. plug.  It will show up on out 7/8 if I drag the E.I. plug to one of the individual kick tracks.

Hi Seth,
Wow...that's super weird...I'll help if I can but you may want to contact support.

In the E.I. plugin (when it's on a bus) do you see the correct inputs and outputs chosen? Do you see level on the input and output meter?

Just finished a new test of it.  It is now working better.  No idea why.  As near as I can tell, I didn't change anything except for restarting the computer.  It's still not working quite right, though.

I can put it on the kick bus (or any other bus for that matter) and it sends to out 7/8 and returns through the appropriate input.  Yesterday, even though the output meter on the E.I. was jumping, there was no signal present at out 7/8.  When I SOLO the bus, however, I lose sound.  The output meter on the E.I. is still jumping, but there is no signal coming from out 7/8.  (The mains meter for out 7/8 at this point does not jump.)

When I drag the E.I. over to a track, the SOLO function works as expected - I hear the kick drum by itself with the effect applied.

Weird stuff here.  On the other hand, now that I've heard it at least as part of the mix, this comp really spanks as a drum bus compressor!  I'm excited about it if I can get the E.I. working right.

Hi Seth,
Glad you got it sorted. The problem you mentioned about soloing a bus with an E.I. is one I can replicate...I'm pretty sure it's a bug. I've just always kinda worked around it, generally by putting the tracks that feed the bus in their own folder and soloing the folder.

Perfect!  That's a workable workaround and it is working.  I'm happy as a clam now   Hope they fix the bug whenever there's an update.

Thanks for your help Dean!
