External control of SOnar Audio Mixer

Hi All. First post. I've been messing with Cakewalk/Sonar etc since 640Kb was the max RAM in a PC...too many years.... . But... I am still a causal and occasional home user and despite being pretty technical in software terms, I'm no sound engineer. Much of the lingo still confuses me. However.. can anyone help me . I want to be able to have an external input and mixer (such as a Behringer 1832) connect to and control the Sonar audio mixer software. Track by track. Ie. I want to be able to use the physical sliders etc on the Behringer Mixer (or whatever is supported by SOnar), to link and control the audo mixing, to be able to control multiple tracks at once (impossible with a mouse) This is for post record mixing. Not sure what the correct terminology for this is. Can anyone help me with the basic requirement for this ? Which mixers are supported ? I only need a basic 4 to 8 input. Can this bu via USB or do I need some other form of connection or specialist soundcard ? My setup is varied. I have a standard on board Soundcard on one PC running Vista and Sonar (entry level). I have an EMU-1812 and associated card on another PC (currently running Cubase (sorry). Sorry if this is ridiculously basic question. I did search before posting but just got mroe confused :-) Cheers Kev.

Welcome to the forum.
Yes, it can be done.
You connect the device, install drivers if necessary (or install drivers, connect device, RTM), then open SONAR and add the device to the list of controllers it can use.
Or you can use ACT, a utility within SONAR to learn controller movements.
Depending on how 'basic' your version of SONAR is. If it was released before the advent of controllers, well, an upgrade might be in order.

THanks for response.... Do you know if there is any feature I need to look for in the hardware. Ive Not yet bought the mix unit. Your post implies Behringer is supported. As for SONAR version. I thinks its Sonar X1 LE (freebie with a Yamaha Micro-BR). I also have Cubase Studio 4. (yes.. both old versions but OK for my needs at the moment.) Cheers

Unfortunately, my previous post includes just about everything I know about controllers with SONAR. I've never used one.
You might want to ask about the most compatible MIDI controllers in the Cakewalk Hardware forum.
Both Roland and Cakewalk make keyboards; I imagine some of them are better with SONAR as controllers than some off brand would be.
