FAO Gregy - re: firewire interface
I pulled this out as a new post so that we don't hijack the other guys' thread so he can get his problem solved. I can't remember if 2003 can use ASIO, Pro 24 can, but my sound card manufacturer doesn't have an ASIO driver for the Extigy. Looking hard at firewire for a future hardware upgrade, since my new computer has the ins. Any recommendations? Greg What budget? If I were going to buy new sound interface and firewire was available to me, I'd be looking at something like this: http://tinyurl.com/jzwtl http://tinyurl.com/y72atn OR something like this: http://tinyurl.com/ga9xm Good luck!

Thanks, Reese. I'm the one who should have started the new post, but, hey, I was there. I looked at several at MF and GC, and Sweetwater. $200-$300 is what I was thinking, and being a one-man-band, nothing huge. I need MIDI, so the audio-only models aren't enough. I like the Presonus, and Alesis has a 14 channel iO/14 for 300 at Sweetwater. And the M-Audio Audiophile for 200. That looks like what I'll probably get myself for Xmas. Many of you out there use M gear, any problems, difficulties setting it up? Greg

Well, if you had asked me that question two weeks ago, I would have said that the m-audio is great, no problems. end of story. however, i've been having a problem and I think it started when I moved to my new computer. I also suspect it has something to do with the drivers from m-audio and something in my system (bios, northbridge, ?) has a conflict of some kind. the problem is that some midi notes won't play every time. it doesn't seem to matter what synth I'm using, it doesn't matter if I delete the note and recreate it, that will get it to play once or twice, then it stops playing that note again. I'm quite frustrated with it.

That's weird. Whatever I end up buying, I'll hold on to my Extigy until I'm sure everything works. My brother the programmer has an Emu proteus? I think, and it works great, but I like the thing to be sitting on my desk with all the ins/outs right there, with knobs to turn and buttons to push. Old school, I know, but I don't like the way all those wires hang out the back of his computer, and you have to try to read the tiny writing on them to see if you're making the right connection. I'll do a little more research this time, the Extigy purchase was a "I need a sound card that does MIDI, now!" kind of thing. Greg

makes sense. and to be honest, I don't recall having this problem with my midi on my old machine, so it may very well be a machine/bios/motherboard incompatibility type problem that might be rare.

If it were me i would go for the presonus stuff over the alasis, if I was just working by myself as the Presonus has better Pres. I am saving for the New presonus Firestudio.

Yeah, Rob, that FireStudio looks impressive. I've been looking online for something in the FireWire vein, and this ain't easy. Reading the reviews, some are glowing, others are so-so, and others are condemnations. How can they work so well for some people and not so well for others? I know a lot of the difference has to do with the computer and program they're using, but jeez, can't they make a product that will work on anything? Well, they probably do, it just costs 10 grand. And then, there are those products with the fine print "not tested with Windows Media Center Edition". I suppose I should have had a custom machine built, instead of buying right off the shelf. The Presonus specs look good, but in my price range is the Firebox, and I don't like the combo serial MIDI/SPDIF input. Suppose I want both hooked up? I think I'll try the M-Audio FW 410, or FW Audiophile, the Alesis iO/14 looks good. The Edirol FA-66 is worth checking out, and since they're the only company that advertizes CW software on their site, it should work with MC. Heck, I don't know what to get! Three hundred bucks will buy a lot of beer....... Greg

Thanks, Reese. I was looking at these the other day. It's good that CW provides this for people interested in buying their products (imagine butt-kissing sound here), so we can get a better idea of what might work well. Greg

So I was looking at the Cakewalk Sonar SPS 660 software/hardware package ($800!) and wishing that the hardware could be purchased seperately, when I noticed a similarity with the afforementioned Edirol FA-66. It's the same thing. Greg
