FIT TO TIME, NOT WORKING

I'm having an issue with the "Fit to time" feature and audio tracks. Actually, it's many issues to be honest and the behavior is exactly the same on X1 as it is older versions of Sonar.

Here is the example, I have an audio track (a clip which I bounced to clips to the exact length of the audio data) on the timeline from 136:01:000 to 144:01:000

I then insert a new tempo at the 136:01:000 mark, changing the tempo from 145BPM to 139BPM. As a result I need to stretch some audio tracks to fit the new tempo.

I carefully check the timeline throughout to make sure there are no more tempo changes that I'm not aware of, then I select "Process>Fit to time". Sonar then tells me current time of the clip is from 136:01:000 to 143:03:649 (expected because I changed the underlying tempo) and I input the "new end time" to 144:01:000 and select the stretch audio box.

I execute the command and sonar proceeds to stretch the audio clip to from ending at 143:03:649 to 143:04:310 rather than the 144:01:000 as I had instructed. I've attempted this several times on both X1 and an old copy of Sonar 8, after rebooting, etc, and always the same behavior. I tried to do a second stretch to see if that would get me the rest of the way there, telling Sonar to stretch the audio from 143:04:310 to 144:01:000 and the result of that command was nothing at all, the clip didn't change time one bit.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on or will I just have to rerecord about 7 tracks of audio?  I've looked into older threads and it seems there has always been some issues with "Fit to Time" and audio clips that were never explained or solved. Hopefully we can change that here for people in the future who would have the same problem.

    Ok,  I'm rarely good at solving other's issues,  but let me take stab at this.   i use the "fit to time" feature often,  and many times much as you describe.   It can be fickle.  The only thing is,    I rarely have as many audio tracks as you   have in this project.

    Possible problem:  When you change tempo(including using "Fit to time"),  audio clips do not start in right place if the clip begins after the tempo change.  Solution:  Before trying the "fit to time" edit drag the front of the clip  (from the Bottom) so it does not move the audio but lengthens the clip to before the tempo change.  If fact I think its best if the clip  starts at the beginning, (Measure 1 Beat 1), even tho there is nothing but silence in the clip.

    Another thing that may or may not be related...I find that if the Pic Cashe folder is too full it prevents some edits (audio and midi) from operating correctly.  So try emptying that.

    I have suspected that Frame rates might mess with the "fit to time" edit. 
    Try changing your frame rate in preferences>project>Clock>Timecode format.

    Try doing this edit using Symte Time code instead of measures and beats.  You'll have to figure/look for the corresponding time code to the beats and measures.  Sometime I have to start the edit a frame or two early, then end a frame or two early.  I have to experiment sometimes.


    "fit to time" can be ruff sometimes.  I have experienced what you are describing before,  but I don't recall ever not getting it to work eventually.

    Not confusing at all Jimbo, thank you. I did also try using the timecode instead of the measures/beats before I posted my initial question, and didn't have any luck there either. I will try lengthening out the clip to the very start as you suggest, but just FYI I'd been getting even worse results (even more inaccurate) before I cropped the clip right to the start and end of the audio data (which happened to fall right at the 000 mark of the beginning and end measures) and then I  'bounced to clips' so sonar wasn't working with any track data that I couldn't see which got me closer to correct, but still not correct.

    I will try your suggestions, if that doesn't work I may just have to throw my hands up and export the audio tracks and work with them in another external audio editor.

    Another thing about "Fit To Time",  It does not remember your last preferences.  So if you are fiddling with this and trying things over and over It becomes painfull,  cause you have to make sure all the correct preferences are set,  unlike other edits that remember what you did the last time.

    Perhaps the bakers  could change that. Same with the "insert time" edit.
