FP-7 ins definition file

Hi - has anyone created an ins definition file for the Roland FP-7 piano?  Cakewalk/Sonar doesn't have one available.  If you have created one and would be willing to share I would appreciate it greatly.

It is funny, the other day I was looking for a .ins file for my FP-7 and my Google search brought me to your post....that was 4 minutes old at the time!

Anyway, since I could not find any, I am making my own. It is just a bit boring to do but it is not that much work if you have the documentation in pdf to copy and paste from and you've done it before.  I already have all banks, patches and drummaps working in Sonar. I've borrowed all controllers and NRPN from the Roland GS spec, which seem to be working more or less too. As soon as I have the time to check these and add whatever might be missing I´ll let you know.

    Regards,

    Jose.

I've been looking for this also and would really appreciate a copy even in beta form.

Here is a definition file for the Roland FP-7. Plase let me know your comments. The Forum will not let me to upload a .ins file, so just change the  extension to .ins from .txt.

    Hi Jose,

Many thanks for your post. I figured it out and mine seemed to work. Haven't tried yours yet but was reassured to find it is very similar to my own. Hope your weather is a bit better than ours in not very sunny Scotland.

You are welcome ...About the weather, the forecast for this weekend says temperature will go down to -20 Celsius in some parts of Spain, -9 min to 0 max where I live. It will be sunny, though

Does anyone have a final version of this file yet?  I downloaded and tried the one above, but couldn't seem to get the drums to work.  Thanks,

What is not working? Patch changes and note names work perfectly here in Sonar 6.2 using whatever midi channel. I've even tested the .ins in Reaper and it works too.  I haven't tested NRPN's, maybe that's what you mean it does not work.

    Hi JoseC,

I'm using sonar LE 4.  When I import the .ins file you've loaded there are many banks for many duplications of sets of patches.

Is there a way to get one bank listing all the patches.  for example the roland fp-7 has 278 different tones. So that one bank has a list of patches listing from 0-278 in the order or the roland?

I'm a newbie here so please let me know if i'm interpreting anything wrong.

    Thanks!

    bread,

No, I'm afraid not. The Bank/Patch structure is internal to the FP7. Why Roland did it that way I have no idea, since other synths just use banks with 128 patches, which is the max the midi spec allows. Anyway, once you have the ins file loaded into Sonar, it is far more convenient to use the Patch Browser instead of browsing the banks, since this will show you all the patches and you can sort and filter the list as you wish.

You are welcome. Anyway, more than a workaround I would say that the Patch Browser is the best way to access hardware synth patches, no matter how their banks are. My Emu MP7 has 17 banks with 128 patches each. That is 2,176 presets to browse. The only efficient way to navigate that is using the Patch Browser.
