Hey guys has anyone tried the fw1884 with Win 8/8.1 and KB2970191 ?
This is supposed to be the legacy firewire driver for win 8/8.1.
Looks like it was released 9/9/14.

Interesting!
I will try it as soon as I have the time for it, this should probably fix the issues with the difficult install.
They are probably signed as well?

Sorry the links are broken. I will fix when time allows.
Yes the drivers are signed. I am sure they simply signed the Win 7 drivers which worked perfectly.
Not sure why it took 2 years. Prob needed a couple hundred meetings and some bullet points /action items.

Just an update, I've now tried these signed Legacy drivers from Microsoft and they work perfectly.

I had a reinstall of my Whole DAW rig this weekend (New OS HDD) and there was quite litte hassle to get my FW1884 working.

I just had to install the KB from Microsoft, followed by the FW1884 1.8 Drivers (64bit) then the Sonar surface plugin.
Works perfectly :)

W8.1 is very stable and for Windows 10 Microsoft is preparing great things for audio.

That said if the FW-1884 works well with Windows 7, one can do a double boot machine with both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.

I have a FW-1884 somewhere, perhaps I'll try to set it up again.

I had W7 on a dual boot for a while, just for backup. After 2 months I found out I did not need it and haven't looked back since.

Re:FW-1884 and Win8 - legacy 2015/05/14 09:06:53 (permalink)
You guys made me want to use the FW-1884 again!

So I got it back from the storage room and installed an old Firewire card.

I installed it under Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit with Sonar X3e and it seems to work well.

My only test so far is to open and play back the Sonar X3 Demo - Javier Colon.cwp than came with X3.
It plays back well with 128 samples configured in ASIO.

If you guys have a more complex project for me to try, I'll be grateful to download it.

So my question is: why do you insist on installing a special legacy FireWire driver? Or have I not done something complex enough so far  to show the limits of the standard Windows 8.1 driver?

Hmm, I dont remember why we did use the Legacy driver, but if I'm not mistaken it was because of stability? I think this applies to all FW Devices in Win7 and Win8

Tom probably remember :)

Stability!
RME's drivers needed the "legacy" driver when Win 7 was first introduced.
IIRC one of the RME moderators "thanked" MS for "breaking" the firewire protocol, again!
We (the FW community) picked it (using the "Legacy" driver) up from them.
I'm surprised you're not having any problems (BSOD's, crackling audio).
Keep us posted, will you?
For now I'll stay with Win 7 until the Win 10 dust settles.

Quote from the good Doktor below:
"Nb (always worth saying) if you are running Focusrite and the latest mix control software, you should NOT be running legacy drivers any more (as they previously recommended)."

What does that have to do with the FW-1884?

I wonder if W10 will have better legacy support than W8.  I have M-Audio cards that work fine in W7.
