FX in Master
I know this has got to be simple as can be, but I'm stuck in the dark again :) . I'm still finding a chance now and then to play with X1 and try to learn something each time. Question this time...how do you add an FX to the Master bus? I'd like to add a limiter to the over all mix but when I highlight the Master section there's no FX bin. Do I need to create a "sub master" bus and send everything there first?

Hey Ted, I think you may be experiencing a little confusion as to what the Master section is... Open the console view and you will see 3 sections: 1. The track faders 2. The Bus Faders 3. Your Mains outputs of your sound card This is a little confusing because your mains have master written on them and you are correct there is no effects bin there. Whilst in the console view click the View Tab and you will see 3 options, ensure Bus is selected. One of the faders should say Master if you are using the normal template. This is the effects bin you are after. This Master will have its output selected to one of the outputs of your sound card. If there is no Master bus already created, create a new bus Call it "Master" if you want and have it output to your sound card. Apply Fx to the master FX bin. HTH

Thanks, that's kinda what I was figuring after reading the Help file and not getting anywhere with that. I'm used to using Sony Vegas Pro which has a "Master" section that you can add FX to. I do use buses for certain things, so I assume that I would need to create my Master bus...and send all my individual tracks plus any buses that have been created to the Master bus...which then goes to my sound card output. Whew...I know I'll get this sooner or later :). Thanks again...!

Yes you just need to create a Master Bus to route everything too, and you can add effects to that just like you would in any other channel strip, Once you get used to Sonar it is a great great great DAW, and I think you will be happy with your switch!

You should be able to add fx to tracks and busses from both the track and console view. The FX bin should be in both of them. In the track view, when you drag the track bottom down to make it bigger, you can see all the stuff in the FX bin.

Does anyone know of a way to quickly assign the output of all (or selected) tracks to the new bus? I think we may have been able to do that w/ older versions of Sonar if I recall correctly, but w/ the X series I'm lost. Find a bit of a pain to change each track's output individually. Cheers, Tomek

You can set the bus as the default by right-clicking of the bus and select the "set as default" option. The normal template supplied in SONAR already has it setup for you. You can change groups of tracks by selecting them and hold the Control key and group change anything including the output selection.

Hi scook, thanks for the quick reply. While that is helpful, I'm looking for something to help with my old projects. Cheers, T edit - didn't think changing the output of all selected worked anymore. Let me try that again... edit 2 - can you clarify what you mean by "group change" please? When I select all the tracks, and change the output of track 1 (for example), only the output of track one changes. Not the same behavior have pre-"X" if I'm not mistaken.

With multiple tracks selected, just use the Ctrl key and virtually every control that you change with Ctrl held down will react in a similar way

Ted you are about to embark on your first buss. It will be a new and wonderful experience for you. Please keep your hands inside at all times. Keep in mind that having one buss will lead to more. Multiple buses will be most useful to you as you can use one for one sort of trip and the others for another. Don't forget about bringing alone an auxiliary buss or two too. That way you will have something to send things to. Its time for you to get out of your track and see the world on a buss.
