Most epic non-story of the year so far. And I love how newspapers now consider the content of Twitter to be newsworthy now. It's all over the place. Imagine if there was no Twitter....God forbid they would have to hire some real journalists.

I guess I should count my blessings - the only things that show up in my newsfeed seem to be related to my "likes". This morning, it was an article about Jack Kerouac. A couple of days ago, I had an interesting one about Bruce Lee. I don't know even what or who a Notre Dame BQ is.

Hes the Quarter Back for their football team Christian. We are right on the border in Michigan just North of Notre Dame so of course the news blows this stuff up when something happens. Unfortunately I like most of the news that comes across from liking my favorite news station, but this kinda stuff just rubs me the wrong way. Once they report a piece of news, I wish they would move on to something else. Id hate to remove the like which I have in the past until stuff like this settles but that method get old fast LOL

//rant// It seems that today we give Twitter, Facebook, the internet and network television equal weight when it comes to providing news. Last year CNN gutted their investigative news department. Am I the only one that finds something wrong with all this? Who cares what Ashton Kutcher had for breakfast, not I. I don't think that we can trust social media. There's no checks and balances for anything that shows up online, yet we take it as fact. More and more, I find that the stuff on TV and online doesn't match the reality I see when looking out the window. //rant//

I don't trust any of them. Never did. Mr. Harper recently met the two winners of a reality TV show (an abomination from back home called Occupation Double - think Jersey Shores), didn't he? Meanwhile, the First Nations protests went on and on... Keeping people stupid and misinformed is a lucrative business.

Facebook has become annoying. Several pages seem to no longer have an option to "like" or "comment" only to "share". Perhaps it is something that I don't understand but that would be nothing new. If something shows up on my newsfeef that I don't like, I just "hide" it. I am amazed by the occasional friend who tells me they are going to remove me from their feed because of something like, "dude, the election is over". Well that does not lessen my rolse as part of the loyal opposition. I do not understnd people who do not want free speech. I never look for an argument and shy from engaging in them because they accomish nothing and I am quick to remove a post if someone points out to me that the facts are wrong, no problem with that. I welcome the truth. I try to listen to a counterpoint to my POV and I learn from it, I may still disagree but I listen. Oh well... maybe that is why I spend a day on FB and then forget it for a week. Sometimes I don't check my email for a week or more and if I didn't have my business line forwarded to my cell I would turn it off most of the time. I have no MP3 player, I listen to music or mre likely talk radio when in my truck.... musi is either Album 88 (88.5 FM Georgia State University) they mostly play new music. I detest hearing the same old music I have been hearing for 30-40 odd years. News... FOXNews. They present both sides but I don't care for their opinion shows except for Wednesday PM I like O-Reilly when Dennis Miller is on.... gotta love Dennis. A local legend did his last show on Friday and I consider it a real loss. The Neal Boortz Show is officially history, to be replaced by Herman Cain (I am really unsure about this replacement) ifHerman talks about tax reform more than once a week... I will be looking for something else but I have a feeling that he is a one topic man. Facebook is weird to me... too many people either reposting things they have not researched or posting what they had for dinner. I don't get Twitter at all. I have a Twitter acct but I cannot imagine anyone reads anything I have to say... why would they care? I think we shuld all take the advice of The Bonzo Dog Band: "Lets Make Up and Be Friendly". FB... eh. J

I think Facebook is great for communication between friends and family who are separated by distance. I use it almost exclusively to keep in touch with my old friends back in the UK, and have friended very few people here because I see them in person. I have trouble understanding why people who live around the corner from each other spend half their time talking to each other on Facebook. It seems a little sad. In fact I feel sad about spme of my old friends back home who seem to spend all of their free time (or all day if they're not working) either drinking, watching TV, watching 80's music videos on YouTube or (usually) all 3 at once. And they're posting a running commentary of it on Facebook. It's always "Can't wait to finish work so I can make a start on the beer" or "Shall I open another bottle of red? Why yes, I think I will!" I can't understand what makes people want to broadcast their drinking habits online, every day of the week Or they're watching TV and posting updates about the things they're viewing, as if they expect everyone else to be watching it as well. Loads of them seem to have no hobbies outside of drinking or watching TV. Makes me depressed.

When my daughter and her boyfriend are here for dinner, we'll often sit down and watch a movie in the evening. Within 5 minutes they'll be sitting side by side with their iPhones, both on FB. I asked them the other night why it wasn't possible to just do one thing without having do something else at the same time - i.e. just watch the movie? Blank looks. Seems to be an addiction of sorts.

Yeah it plays havoc with your concentration. I'm a pretty bad phone fiddler. If it's not Facebook it's the 12 or so games of Words With Friends I have going. We're becoming addicted to getting and responding to notifications. That red notification icon on Facebook is like a hit of cocaine. To be honest I'm not one to sit for any length of time on Facebook or WWF. It just fills those little gaps in between doing more important things. But I don't think I can remember the time when I used to just sit and think in those gaps. Even a 30 second elevator ride has me pulling out the phone and reading an email. Having said that, I'm unashamedly in love with gadgets and technology.

Yep - it's pretty insidious. Every time I pick a book, it takes a while before my brain quits the nasty habit of scanning for new info. It's like it's expecting a new source of excitement. So I make an effort to regularly focus one ONE thing - a book, a tutorial or whatever. But long gone are the days when I could sit there for hours just listening to albums - and doing nothing else. Furthermore, since my record collection resides on the computer, it's way too easy to start reading something on the web, then looking up a word, clicking on a link, ending up on wikipedia - and then another word reminds you of that cool plug-in you want to buy, and all of sudden you realize that you have like w/ 20 tabs open in your browser, yet, you have no idea why you ended up watching those funny cat videos on YouTube... :s

The following is in general about users online activities; The media can easily and conveniently obtain photos for use in news articles for example; a wife of a soldier who died later finds out that newspapers had 'freely' used a photo without prior permission or knowledge. In another incident the wrong photo (mistaken identity) the same name; wrong person. That said; I'm also seeing more and more photos published by media with the tag; Photo by; {name of social site} Fact is; not many people bother reading the terms of use before uploading content. There are also concerns about photos and graphic art used by some corporations to sell merchandise without permission and acknowledgement. Photos and Graphics Stolen I think it's best for music artists to use social sites 'music page' accounts purely as business advertisement space but be very careful in regards to content uploaded. Recently I've changed strategies that limits my participation dramatically and restrict media content to basically; 'external links'; thereby leaving most of that actual content OFF social sites. This works well because often links are 'shared' among friends and I'm OK with that. A lot of music artists use as many sites as available to spread awareness about their music much further; to hopefully be discovered by a major label. I see nothing wrong with that; what I see terribly wrong is being careless with content and comments freely submitted without realizing possible consequences that may occur in the future..... Media loves a great story but be aware that not all music reviews and music news articles will be positive.

sharke That red notification icon on Facebook is like a hit of cocaine. Thats the BEST description Ive ever seen on it, Not for me but what has happened with everyone I see around me. I dont even have a phone anymore. Just got so tired of giving AT&T an extra $70-80 a month when there are so many phones and ways to catch me. So nice not having one. The other day out driving around getting things done felt so good not having that thing constantly bothering me. Kinda took me back to the days before cell phones when ya felt like you were getting things done without being constantly bothered or getting side tracked by some gadget. Really feels good

or WWF Pardon my ignorance but what is WWF? I saw another reference to it in another thread. OK, I took the time to use Google, is it Words With Friends? I assume so... I have all apps and invitations to FB apps blocked. I guess that is why I didn't know. Maybe this is why I only have one real friend (lots of FB friends though). I would get irritated to the point of rudeness by this (WWF) in less than a day... then I would have no friends, lol. I absolutely hate "chat" or messenger service. I mean, I am reading about something or looking for something online or studying amateur gynecology and someone pops in with, "Hey, what are you doing"? Really? I could easily become a hermit. I don't like landline phones much and I really hate cellphones but it has become a necessity because of business. I really believe people need quiet time in order to be psychologically healthy. I don't use GPS, I don't play games on my phone or computer. I don't answer the phone if the number is "out of area", they can eave a message. Actually I leave chat enabled on FB but I find that if I have nothing to say and use answers like nothing, yes, and, no... the conversation does not last long and I can get back to my demented little life. I have been considering closing my FB acct. but no...I will keep it, I have found some people I Love who I have not seen in years. Then again there are other old friends who I wonder about because of the things they post on FB. Facebook bothers me most of all because it parades the ignorance of people and it is truy diturbing. Most people are not stupid but many are truly ignorant. I think it is a display of the failings (by design) of our government school system and media, in that they choose to not teach people a complete and true history of either the nation or the world and forget a civics lesson with an open discussion. Oh well... J
