Facility to add audio output channels for multi-out VST instruments.
I am looking for someway of enhancing my workflow when it comes to adding audio tracks for multi-out VSTs. In Cubase, Studio One and Bitwig it is possible to just select the VST I want and get a list of possible VST outputs and just toggle on the ones I want. The audio track is automatically created with the corresponding output channel as the name of the track. I know when bringing in a VST within Sonar I can have them all created for me or just a single output. Typically I do not want to be presented a whole bunch of tracks I do not need. Cubase is nice because it automatically drops the newly created tracks in a logical subfolders for the VST. I am running Platinum. Thanks in advance for the help.

You can add an audio track and assign it to your vst but I prefer your method of doing it from the actual vst as you can see immediately where is is going I didn't know that was how cubase and studio 1 did it. Steve

If I need just a couple outputs, I'll let SONAR create the first one, then clone it, and change name and input assignment of the clone. If I need more than a couple, I'll let SONAR create all of them, and then whack what I don't want. Although somewhat pointless, it probably actually takes fewer clicks than individually selecting a specific number of outputs when inserting the VSTi. And you can let SONAR create a track folder for you as well. If you want more automation, you should spend some time creating custom Track Templates with associated VSTis and specific outputs and track names already set up.

Thanks for the reply. Those solutions are workable but definitely not elegant or efficient. For example Halion creates, I believe, 32 output tracks, so all at once is a little crazy, but yes I can select and delete. Creating one by one even using clones still requires a few clicks to set name, instrument and input. I guess the answer to my questions is there is not function that is comparable to the ones in Bitwig, Cubase or Studio One. In no way a deal breaker but would have been nice.

Unfortunately, in Sonar, you are limited to either selecting the First Audio Output or All Audio Outputs, there is no way to select, say 8 or 12. Depending on the Vsti involved, I will either select All and delete the ones I don't want, or select First and clone the one that is created.

Hi rickshapiro, I use Cubase as well and there is no similar method of adding VSTi outputs in Sonar. That said, brundlefly really hit the nail on the head when he mentioned track templates. You can create a template of a multi-out VSTi, including routing, busses, sends and FX and add it with just a couple clicks. For me that's been super handy, particularly with drum VSTi (Superior Drummer, BFD, AD etc) and really one of the reasons I stay with Sonar as my primary DAW. Dean

Spot on Dean. There's only a finite amount of time I want to spend creating bloody drum maps!

Will definitely spend some time with the track templates.
