Factory Yoyo Presents: "Sit Tight/Growing Up", a journey through life in the Key of Funk

Been working on this for two months on and off. Might be my best song yet. Another in the Bootsy/George Clinton/Funkadelic vein.
Lyrics are pretty cool, so check 'em out at the Soundcloud site.

James, this was freakin' outstanding.  Granted, I may have missed a few, but this is my favorite of yours so far... loved it right out of the gate.  Great feel, and one of the most clever and well thought out lyrics I've heard in a long time... here or elsewhere.

Absolutely superb job all the way around!  Gerat tune, performance & production with a ton of commercial appeal (IMHO).  Way to go, man!

Do you have to rub it in like this? I mean really! Asked my son when it started if he liked it and he said he liked it, but the voice was funny :-) But he was dancing along by the end of the song? And saying SIT TIGHT!

    Jim,

Love what you've done with this and yes it is one of your best so far.
Lyrics are awesome and you deliver them very well.

The reason why I like it more than your others is you have that many repetitive hooks that the listener can identify with, which are "Sit Tight" ,"Ohh Ohh's" and "Growing up", you remember them after youve finished listening.

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air meets stevie wonder!!!

You have a serious skill in horn arrangements too. Lovin' the prince style guitar rhythm licks and that bass "ooommm" at the end of the breakdown!

Great story.  Life's circle.  Well produced, as usual, but the story is the prize in this song.  You presented it in a nice musical case and I enjoyed the heck out of it.

Thanks for the great comments, guys.

This one got started before Christmas  but didn't really come together until real late...just wrote the words last week before I took off to Vegas for a conference, and the guitars at the coda were just added yesterday morning, which is cool cuz it went to a totally different ending than I had previously considered.

Out of all my tunes, I think this mix might be closest to what I envisioned when I started: there are a ton of layers and they can all be heard rather well (except the keyboards at the coda; those swirly Rhodes are impossible at times to fit into a dense mix). Add to that there are 46 tracks and a lot going on pretty much the entire song and it was a real trick to mix. A lot of compromises, but better finished than perfect...

    Kev:
Are you implying my Bootsy impression is ranging into CARTOON characterizations? ;)

    Robby:

Yeah, whenever you have a great tune like Just A Lie and get too big headed, I like to throw out the big guns! ;)

    Cian:

I admit that "Parents Just Don't Understand" did indeed come into mind at the end of writing the lyrics.

    Warren:

The lyrics are meant to be both kinda poignant and funny, which is kinda how I am in real life. Glad you got the circle of life turnaround at the breakdown.

First rate James ! I love the crunchy clap snare sound, to me this is what puts it in 'pro production' level. How did you track / process your backbeat sound on this track?

Thanks...good to see you round these parts again.

    Gary:

The drums are all sampled loops, and there five different loops going on at various times. I do parallel processing on most of the major elements, where there is some Master output directly from the track (usually with some compression) and then also sent to a buss where I really slam it. Gives you at least some dynamics with a floor to rest on.

Mix/production sounds great. No surprises there I guess.  Main vocals do sound slightly cartoonish to my ears - not sure if that's the right description, maybe parodical would be a better word. If that's the intention then you nailed it. If not, then it's a very good effort, far better than I and I'm sure many others could do, but not quite convincing to my ears - sounds like somebody trying to be someone else rather than being themselves if that makes sense.

James, Very cool arrangement, lyrics, and performance.  Fun song!  I hear what Paulo was talking about it and thought the same myself.  The delivery is good and there is nothing "wrong" with it but you get a sense that this person doesn't naturally sing this way.     Maybe try a version sang more natural to your own style?   It's great either way though.  Nice job on this.  Thank you!
