Factory Yoyo presents: Christian Rock?!?
Yes, it's true... Due to what seems to be an abundant amount of believers who populate this forum, it occurred to me to indulge the Jesus-loving side of my personality and whip up some good ole-fashioned Christian Rock. And since Shad is not around for a few more weeks, perhaps we can just enjoy it without the religious wars that seem to crop up around these types of tunes. So here's a quickie about being humble with God, waiting for His glorious return, and all that good stuff. Ordinary Pilgrim I'm just an ordinary pilgrim I walk this world but not alone One fine morning I'll be gone You might need somebody You might need somebody to love You may want someone But there'll be nobody to love Oh no ya just can't do it Oh no ya just can't do do it it again Nobody wants to be stuck in the middle Nobody wants to be stuck in the middle Nobody wants to be stuck in the middle of this one I'm just an ordinary pilgrim I walk this world but not alone One fine morning I'll be gone The devil he's keeps running The devil is running ya down But Jesus keeps coming Lifting up to higher ground Oh you wanna get yourself right Oh you wanna get yourself right with Him Nobody wants to be stuck in the middle Nobody wants to be stuck in the middle Nobody wants to be stuck in the middle of this one I'm just an ordinary pilgrim I walk this world but not alone One fine morning I'll be gone

Real nice! The guitars sparkle nicely and the drums stand out well. Entire mix is great. I agree on the vocal FX being perfect for the moment.

1st listen: Top notch: such a blazing hot rock-hymn per se ... better than all x-mas songs to my ears. ... Potent message (to my conscience) ... the lyrics and hook. Singing/arrangement/mix/production is extremely vibrant and powerful with a bit of that proven 80's flavor hard-rock. --------------------------------------- A 'possible' consideration (for repeat listening) might be to warm up the lows and mids a bit with more saturation-distortion (for reasons I've posted in Technique's forum) ... but currently, I may be too obsessed with global warming.

How fun! :-) You always sounds like you're having so much fun when you're singing. :-) This is great. Got tired of all CCM music sounding the same, it sounds like. :-)

jamesyoyo So here's a quickie about being humble with God, waiting for His glorious return, and all that good stuff. A wonderful sentiment that I share, I'm glad I missed whatever drama went on. Love ye god and love ye one another, why is this so difficult. Love this tune BTW not at all what I was expecting from a Christian rock song. This really rocks, awesome job on vox and instruments.

This sounds truly professional. The guitars sparkle perfectly, nice bass underneath and vocals are lovely. Really nice

Fun song, James. Has a very 70's rock feel (good thing). I like the modulations toward the end and the octave playing on the guitar.

I had to listen with cans this eve and it sure did sound good. The drive/energy for some reason reminded me of Meatloaf. Liked all the sounds/tones James but your vocals were really shining. Ace.

Cool!! Awesome message and vibe... Vocals are great. Was it an intentional homage to Matthew Sweet ("You might need someone to love" from his song "Girlfriend") or just a coincidence?

Frank, Scotty: "Jesus is just all right with me, Jesus is just all right with you..." Thanks! Philip: Glad you liked it. I must admit that your PM last month was somewhat of the catalyst for this. It is actually three acoustic guitars going , and the only electric is the two leads. But here is the real question: Are you sure it doesn't sound like ELO to you? Janet: You are right. CCM music usually bores me: all narcissistic earnestness, not a lot of craft or imagination. Kinda makes ya think God only likes one type of music, no? Rob, No How, Grant, Herb: Much thanks for the listen and kind words. Spacey: I really struggled singing this one, as I wrote most of it in 1992 when I could reach that high Bb off the the Eb chord. Now it's in too high a key for these aging pipes. So thanks! Geno: Lennon, huh? I'll take it. Dave: If by saying "homage" you mean "completely ripped off", I will totally cop to that. I wrote that part of the song back in 1992, when MS was at his Girlfriend-y best.

Strat: That bass is midi via the Native Instruments Red Clean bass patch, played thru a Pod Farm Power Pop bass amp setup, then run through Ozone's "Bass Track" setting via a buss. All that work just to get a decent bass sound!

I don't think Shad is anti-christian. He is just anti-hypocrite or what he considers to be hypocritical. I'm not saying anyone here is. I too am a christian. Some of my music might not reflect that, maybe? ANYWAY: Good tune James! Just when I was getting into it my soundclick mp3 gliched. Never had it happen before like that. i'LL TRY AGAIN IN A WHILE. I got to approx 3:15, an instrumental break, and wanted to look at the time when it just went away. Any way I really liked that.

Warren: I mostly like Shad and I don't think he is anti-christian. But one has to admit he has gotten fairly contentious about the topic of religion a whole bunch of times. Thanks for the listen!

James, I liked this song. It's fresh and different. I enjoyed the lyrics. IMO, this has an 80's vibe to it and I liked it. I would tend to agree with you that CCM music has been lacking some critical elements for me as of late. I haven't been able to put my finger on it. For the most part, there have been fewer and fewer songs that really get my attention from an artistic standpoint or even minister to me (Not directed at you). Thanks for sharing, Rich

If I had a hat I would doff it in your general direction ! Without wishing to cause any offence to anyone, I do find CR to be little predictable and syrupy sometimes, but not here. Sounds a lot like mid-80's Def Leppard to me - hey, it's not quite the John Lennon comparison I know, but it's still a good thing. My first taste of a yoyo production and obviously your reputation on here as a guy who knows his onions is well deserved.

Great job as always from you. Mix is a tad bright for my taste but that's just a preference thing. There is only one jamesyoyo for sure. I mean that in a good way. If I read into your meaning correctly it might seem that if one "rides the fence" so to speak then one may not get or fully understand some things about life. (Or care to). CCM just like any kind of music can get to sounding the same but (all) genres have this. I think there will always be absolutely great songs in most genres. Then there will be just "good" songs. Anyway you did a very good mix on this.

Gary: Glad you enjoyed it. Rich: To be honest, I haven't seriously listened to CCM in more than 25 years. But when I do come across it on the radio or on TV is has a very bland quality to it that makes me feel the CCM industry is set up to not musically challenge or offend any listener. Which is odd coming from the Christian point of view, that Jesus came to shake up everything. Paulo: My first taste of a yoyo production and obviously your reputation on here as a guy who knows his onions is well deserved. As the great John McClane would say: "Welcome to the party, pal!" JMan: Most of my mixes are too bright! That's cuz that's the way I like 'em! Lyrically, I was referring to the Rapture (one fine morning I'll be gone) in most of the song, so the "nobody wants to be stuck in the middle" is more of a warning than an observation.
