Factory Yoyo presents: "Knock It Off"

Start with two parts funk, one part 70s Afro-revolution, one part James Brown; stir in a big chunk of the Urban Liberation Choir, add a heaping dose of organ, clav and guitar; shake until it explodes.

Knock It Off

Feel free to play loud.

I think Sir Nose would say this is pretty fly. When you were born, did your parents drop you off in a basket on a doorstep in Harlem?  Almost made me want to dance...

I knew by the end of the first bar i would like this and i did. I would have liked more bottom end, but as you described James all the ingredients are there and i can now season to taste.

I think you may have snuck a just little more than one part JB in there, but that is never a bad thing. My ears thank you!!

This is a fine piece of work, James.  The arrangement in itself is top notch, as are the performances.  Very, very creative.

GREAT piece/mix!  Funny how it is so Funky but yet I hear a "BECK" vibe . . . I've got two turntables and a microphone. Love the verb/delay and the way the vocals sit in the mix.  KUDOS!

Some of my earliest recollections of music involve our basement, our 45rpm player, my older sisters grooving to Sly and the Family Stone and Stevie Wonder in the very early 70s. While I don't profess to have listened all that much to funk in the subsequent years, it is deep in my musical subconscious, and I guess it shows...

    Dave:
My hometown is next to the first real black suburb, Hempstead NY. So if they did drop me off they didn't have to go that far!

    Stuart:
There is a ton of low end on my sub, though if you listen to those records there was not a lot of low end ever captured until the late 70s.

    Daryl:
re: the horns...samples are your friends, never forget that.  The bass line, the drums, percussion and most of the guitars are samples. I played organ, clav, and a single rhythm guitar.  But I wrote the song around those horn lines.

This song has some phenomenal potential. The hook is great. However the rest of the song needs a lot of work. The arrangement has absolutely too much going on and departs from base key too much. This would have the opportunity to have a really cool funky solo be it guitar or keys or synth placed with. I though the guitar and the horns tones were good. They just all need to be aligned better.

Ignore him James. He turns up every couple of years and trolls around the place for a while doing his best Simon Cowell. He'll disappear on one of his 'tours' eventually.

yes, and considering he expects low latency and top quality out of the realtek soundcard with Guitar Tracks, I think you should take that into consideration when you read anything he has to say about people's music.

Well, well --- Mr. J B meets Funkadelic. You really captured the sound of the late '60's and early '70's soulful, funk sound. I am amazed that you were able to do it all.  Of course the production is tops.
    Excellent.

Really nice tight groove, and good use of your vox.

My only crit would be using that roomy kick with that ultra-piccolo snare sound, but that's a purely preference thing.

But what's not to like here?

    Excellent.

Epic producer skills in evidence here.

Maybe could be tapped on the head a bit earlier as it gets repetitive.

The vocals are very peculiar, an acquired taste maybe.

Hey James we may not be the best of friends but I can appreciate the work on this track, it has a real seventies vibe.  The track is really warm.

    I can't fault the mix.

It's a well executed peice of Funk and I could see it in any of the late 70's cop shows, T.J Hooker, maybe, LoL.

James Brown vibe nailed here 100%. Its all tight

"Time to show our manifesto.." ha

There are so many different genius parts in this but I would say that there is too many, they contrast a little too much and make the song start and stop a little too much. Wasn't too fond of the answering melody line at the start e.g. @ "dont go striking matches near..." feels like it shouldnt go low.anyway.

On the fade out is that a kind of tremolo stereo organ? sounds great.

    Top drawer as usual Jim.

    Hahahahaha!  I love this!

Hilarious urban vocs as anticipated!  Extremely powerful (vibrant) vox hooks and counter hooks ... guaranteed to slicken-up the skate and dance floor.

Dynamics are *straitly-twisted* (unpredictable everywhere) and the funk is surreal!
