Factory Yoyo presents: Sub Rosa NEWER MIX 6-3
Some Foo Fighters-inspired rock. As I guess is my custom, this started as something else, but eventually became a tune about a couple keeping their relationship quiet. Special thanks to my buddy Cian McGovern for all the help and ideas on this one, and for his as-usual super background vocals. UPDATE 5/16: Thanks to the initial commentators, I have a better mix up now. Love to hear your thoughts. Sub Rosa OLD MIX Sub Rosa NEW MIX Sub Rosa Even Newer Mix! Her quiet voice in the night that pains me to conceal The bitter taste of her sweet kiss Knowing that it cannot be revealed They come and place their bet that Romeo will speak of Juliet They beg and plead for the smallest detail But they fail She ain't got a chance in the world that they'll ever ever understand We design to keep it underground A secret in the palm of our hand How I'd die to raise the flag I've sworn to secrecy A vow declared to her and her to me Oh Sub Rosa Nothing's getting under you Oh Sub Rosa Nothing's getting under you Nothing's getting under you Don't ask me if it's true I ain't telling you I ain't telling you

Another fine cameltoe production! Gives me an 80s pop vibe. I'm having a relationship with Jessica Alba, but we're keeping it quiet too...

Hey James. Really nice stuff here. It does seem to be a little all smashed together to my ears. I would like to hear the voc and drums more out front. But, maybe that's just the way I hear things though. I'm on a laptop too. Ya know as I near the end, I'm thinkin, this is what a record sounds like. So, I probably don't know what I'm talking about. BTW, I purposely did not look at the lyrics while listening. 2nd listen reading lyrics, gives a whole new slant to the song. But then, I shouldn't have to read em eh? If you think all that is confusing, well, it is. Sort of what my brain goes thru when I'm working on something. Hope it helps. Nice. Rock On James....................................................

Yep, catchy pop rock ditty. Strong theme, good lyrics and hook. Mid-rangey mix on my monitors. Boost the vox and bass/kick IMO. But your mixes always end up great so I'll wait for the next listen. I like your work James..................Ron

cool guitar tones. for some reason, to me it sounds like this should be about 10bpm faster than it is...yeah a definite Foo-vibe in the chorus.

I'm a fan of your stuff... you know that... I'd like to hear more bass. I was waiting for it to come in.... then I realized , it was, just really low. But I'm also on my cheap speakers.... The song itself is good. Nice tone on the guitars.... just lacking bass.

Hi James, Really cool song. Vocals sound very good. There seems to be a lot of high end (excess) and a little short on low/mids....but it's small speakers i'm listening on.

Good tune. I thought the vocals were excellent, but I wanted to hear more of them. There was some genuinely fascinating processing on the vox, and I kept thinking: how's he doing that???? The production was mostly signature Yoyo, though, somehow the mix felt a tad 'hot.' James, I love your stuff, but I got the feeling that you were maybe one mix away from really nailing this one. You've set your own bar very high, and for most of the rest of us this would be perfect. All this being said, I still loved it!

James, Nice job, I think I like the old mix better (other than the bass needs to come up a little) than the new mix. The new mix sounds too compressed, squashed to my ears. The highs are a little shrill too. Listening through headphones at work. Guitars sounds awesome. Regards

Hi James, always love listening to your stuff. You're a great musician/engineer man. I'll give you my take for what it's worth. I listened to both mixes and actually prefer the old one. But one thing remains in both...your hats and cyms are ssssssssssssss'n like a snake on both of these and really bad on the new one. There's a lot of something going on here that seems to bury the other instruments. Like sometimes I hear the guitars, other times I have to struggle to hear them. Bass is a bit low....cyms/hats need to come down a bit with less highs. I'd say they are heavy in the 10k to 12k range and seem to be the biggest offenders in the mix. So much so, they are just too loud to hear what else is going on. From what I can hear, I DO like the song, all the parts and of course your performance. Just a few mix things to clean up and I think this one will be golden. . :)

New mix is an all-around solid rock performance with much magic building up toward the finale. Your signature rocks! Though the lyrics are a little 'difficult' (to me) the performances are mighty awesome ... so stellar and captivating!

Hi, James, This is a really dynamite song! Very well written, and to me, it sounds like a cool fusion of Foo Fighters and Cheap Trick. Great playing, killer vocals and Cian's BGVs sound excellent. I think I'm in the minority, but personally, I have to say that I like the new mix much better than the first. The first one seemed to be all mids and highs and lacked bottom end punch, but I believe that I can hear the bass guitar and kick much better in Mix #2. Really nice job on this James! Bob

Listening on my buds.... James.... the vox sound really "pushed" in this. The bass is better. I think..... just my opinion.... that you have the instruments a bit too loud for the song.... guitars in particular. I'm hearing lots of highs (kinda like my Mott mix) This is not the mix I was expecting to hear from you..... normally your mixes are pretty clean, and balanced. Something is off...kinda like you're struggling to find the right niche for this........ again, this is my opinion.

Your music covers a lot of different genre, IMHO. At first I thought that the vocals needed to come up but after I listened a couple times I don't know. . Interesting lyrics. Without them being written down, though, I don't think I would have understood them as well. Either way, I really liked this tune and go to the next one wondering; What is Sub Rosa? :-)

"Oh Sub Rosa...nothings gettin under you", that part of the song could easily be played on a television advert, fact. Didn't hear too much difference between the old and new, liked the bass boost, although i still thought that hi hats etc were to "swishy". Great tune, and the lyrics can only appreciated after a few listens. Cian

Very nice work, James. It's a very full mix yet you seem to keep it from ever getting the least bit muddy ( I think that's a bit of a challenge with this genre and probably why the Bass may have been pushed back in your first attempt ) Another fine production and mix.

Cool song, I think I like mix 1 better but the bass needs to come up. The new mix while the bass is up to a good level, the song itself has lost the warmth to my ears. Real nice vox and performance! Dan

You know, since I am constantly genre-flipping, situations like this is why I rarely ever record anything but a dry guitar/bass signal, and then re-amp to fit it in the mix. This time I recorded both the main guitar and the bass signal from the PODX3 fully wet with amp and effects, and it has proven to be incredibly difficult to fit them in without swamping everything else. Thanks everyone for the constructive crits on this...will attempt yet another mix later on this week.

I like the tone and style of the vocals. Interesting what you say about recording with the wet signal. The delay on the guitars may be a little heavy, but if recorded wet it's hard to adjust. A friend of mine who owns a studio and who is a fabulous guitarist (and excellent engineer) records his guitars wet. It works for him I beleive because he knows exactly the sound he is looking for and what will work. For me it's different. For the last couple of years I'm recording dry guitar signals only - it seems the most flexible - (and I don't exactly know what I'm looking for). So based on your experience with this one will you go back to recording dry?
