Factory Yoyo presents: The Future
Who's up for some 80s throwback perfection? I was, at least when I started this over a year ago. The theme of fear of technology back then was huge, and unfortunately, kinda prescient. So I added some ideas about sex and robots and all the potential for these heady things. Thanks to Danny Danzi for his encouragement to finish this. https://soundcloud.com/hammertoe/the-future

The 80s is alive in James' head. Yay! Groovy man. Whoops, wrong decade. My bad.

I could picture the video that would accompany this. Bright colors, disco balls, big hair, dancers in Spandex with leg warmers. A great time capsule. Makes me want to do the same for the 70's, but I don't think I could handle the drugs.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

Excellent. As soon as the drums kicked it was certainly a retro 80's flashback for me. Glad you pushed through and finished this.

James, You nailed the fun side of the 80's, really good job. Haven't heard that many Syndrums in a long time:) Would be interested to hear about your production techniques, I hear some vocader work but you also have some low robotic voices, also vocader or another process? Are you using Battery for drums? Your verbs, arps and overall dimensions are spot on 80's polished perfection. Regards

James - definitely 80's technopop sounding! listening on cans on a laptop - sounds like a "clean" mix. I really like the guitar at the break before the key change - that's my favorite part! nice work!

Its the Addictive Drums 2 Simmons kit. Those Simmons drums were inescapable for most of the early 80s. I used the new VocalSynth vocoder from Izotope for the chorus, and everything else was some Nectar 2 pitched presets that I tweaked a bit.

Yeah.... that was the kind of music I didn't like either..... but you did it well. Perhaps you were a secret listener and disciple of the 80's kind of music. It's not as cool as Sanity Frowns (IMHO) but still a nice blast from the past.... so... if you have any more unfinished tunes in the box... it's time to roll them out and get the job done. Excellent work.

Great vibe, and well performed, as always. Personally I'd like to hear a bit more bottom end bass guitar and kick drum, as well as some more beef hanging under the guitars. The mix sounds a little "tinny" to my ears.

Walt, it's funny you say that. Most 80s tracks had nothing below 70hz. I thought there was TOO much bottom to be a real homage! Thanks for commenting.

Well, I wouldn't say "most"... but I guess much of the poppier stuff from the 80s did cut the bottom end pretty aggressively, even including some "heavier" bands like Van Halen (who I have always thought sounded "tinny" as well). Most of the 80s stuff I listen to didn't really go that route (REM, Police, Queen, AC/DC). But that's not the kind of 80s homage you were going for, so please disregard my comment. :) In any case, still a great job regardless of EQ preferences!

this is deffo 'echt'. even lesser known bands like It Bites were using those vocoder patches and of course the verby chorused drums. brilliant tune as well, which has been missed a little. i thought the guitar solo was a little weak - not 100% pitching and not as whammied as the 80s could have used - maybe ask Danny Danzi for a solo?! otherwise loved it James

Thanks Mark. The guitar solo I did last year, and I did indeed tune up my lazy bends, but I guess notenough. I am not a lead guitarist in the slightest, I just do what I gotta with it.

My comparison would be a later Yes hybridized with Wang Chung. I think that's it. As long as you keep bringing such excellent songs and mixes that nail the older eras, I'll be pretty hooked. In the couple of tunes I've heard lately, you do a great job with adding and clearly mixing many different elements. Where a lot of songs have four things going on at once, you have 12. And I can hear them all and they're great! Kudos on the bgv's. I'd agree, just a little more bass would be nice. -Tom

Great sound on a great song! You have many elements in this that all tie together very well. Those, along with the key changes, really peaked my interest. The mix is completely off the chain! I was totally impressed from start to finish.
