Factory Yoyo presents: a cover, done quietly

Here is a cover of one of my favorite tunes: it is fairly obscure. I got it done quickly, but it was fun stripping it down from loud guitars to the soft piano and blues guitar.

Evening Jim! This is excellent, never heard the song before but it has a lovely melody and chords. Great version in fact I listened to it twice something I rarely do here.

You playin the keys in that? Did you record the vocal and keys together before adding the other bits?

OK, I just spent about 1 1/2 minutes listening to the original (I'm obviously not into details, like clicking the RIGHT link...)....and sitting here wondering how many voices you actually have.  And wait a minute...I thought this was a piano tune?  Oh yeah....duh...there we go.  So yeah, this is great.  I like the mellow version.  Great job on the keys, guitar/s and vocals once again.

Hey JAMES . . . I didn't expect this take on a Enuff Z'nuff tune.  Enjoyed it greatly, way to think out of the box.  Ever once in a blue moon in Blue Island a suburb of Chicago I see Chip Znuff.  He runs a studio in the baement of his bungalow when he's not in Cali.  GREAT JOB!

Who did this originally? In parts I liked your vox really well on this, there were just a few parts where you may want to re-record. "take everything that smells like you." :-( I like that line, I used it on my last girlfriend when we broke up? when I came home, the fish tank was gone :-( I miss those fish... I could watch them for hours.

Simple chords, real heartbreak. Just what I like in a song, Cian.
No, I actually didn't have any sheet music so the piano I picked up piece-by-piece by ear off the original. But I never play and sing at the same time; I can't pull it off.

I always considered the failure of groups like Enuff Z'nuff was one of the main reasons I never got into this business: super talented, fantastic songwriters, large volume of terrific radio-ready songs, 2 major record label deals, and they never found any real success. I was not ballsy enough to live my life on that slim chance. Not good enough, either!

There are no parts I want to re-record. I can't sing, bro, or haven't you learned that by now?

very cool tune...love the way the guitar following the vox..and really liked the stop/pop (e.g. 1:40ish)...very nice touch there..very simple but very very effective! Nice job...

Aside from the nice studio/mixing work...

Its just a damn good song!!

A real change of pace for you on this James, realtive to other recent Factory Yoyo tunes I've heard.  I never caught the original as best I can recall, but this sounded really good.  Some very interesting processing on the vocals... what was that, or is it a secret?

Anyway, I liked it a lot.

First time I heard it, I got the same vibe. I guess it is the way that melody in the second line hits the F#m.

Funny thing, there is very little processing to the vocals, which is the complete opposite of how I usually work.  I had nothing but ProChannel on my main vocal, a send to a heavy compressed buss, but kept that relatively low (-16db or so). For the bgvocals, I used GuitarRig's Airverb patch and a little widening with Channel tools. All vocals were sent to a reverb buss with EpicVerb on it.

Hey James I think you got a good voice. The widening on them is interesting.  I thought the piano sounded like there was some slight high cut or something. Not blanketed or muffed. Not unclear either. Like it was missing some sort of sparkle ever so slightly. Nice job though.

James - A great production as usual with a nice sparse instrumentation.   I'm used to hearing much more complicated instrumentation and arrangement from you.    Did you even use midi tempo or was it all just recorded straight in without regard to midi tempo?  Also, do you mind letting us know what kind of reverb you are using?

    Ton:

Thanks for the encouraging words, bro.

    Rhyno:

In DAWs, I find centered vocals to be unlistenable. There always seems to need a spread on most tunes I hear on this board.
The piano is a Concerto Grand, heavy in reverb, hence the rolled off highs.

    Geno:

Are you kidding? The entire thing is midi clocked to the microsecond. I just slowed the tempo down at the end. I used epicVerb, a freebie I came across from another forum. It was a custom patch.

I'm not familiar with the original ... so my ponderings may be off.

I felt a lot of enthusiasm ... heart, emulation, etc. ... choruses are exceptionally strong.  And I felt more of the excellent YoyoFactory vibe.

Like many of my emulations of others, this song feels 'inside-the-box' a bit ... at this stage.  The choruses 'feel' wonderful AS IS.

    Personally I'd tweek more:

-- Lengthen Vox delays/doubles (delay time) to decrease comb-filtering in the 'naked' sections.

-- Single vox some of the 'naked' portions with intimate retakes (closer-mic-whispering, or poetics, non-melodics, or pitch correction (if you feel like it).

-- Otherwise, I'd creatively experiment with pad elements in the naked sections:  White noise or grey percussives, ambient but humanized tambs, shakers, etc ... that you like with your vox.

It gives the original a different feel.  A more mellow and instrospective mood which I think makes it more intimate and perhaps a more appropriate arrangement.  Great job!

Love this.  I'm sitting here at my computer listening to songs on the forum while my wife takes a shower.  When this finished, she yelled from the bathroom, "Who was that? That's great!"  So that's two thumbs up from this household.  I too remember the original version.  This is a great rendition.  Thought the vocals were excellent.
