Factory yoyo presents: Teofilo

The music for this was finished in March, but I struggled for months to come up with melody/lyrics. Nothing inspired me, and since this is an obvious nod to the Police, I knew I wanted some of that Caribbean influence that so infected their tunes.

Happened to be out to dinner with my boy 10 days ago and Olympic Boxing was playing on the tv. Then inspiration hit me: Teofilo Stevenson, the greatest amateur boxer ever, who never turned pro because it would mean having to defect from his beloved Cuba. Then it just flowed all out.

One of my best-played tracks, lots of good guitar layering and some real mood changes in the middle.

Teofilo

Very nice work. It certainly moves in a spirited manner.

On the first listen right now. Everything sounds good. I'm on crappy speakers but it has punch and I can hear it all clearly...which is the goal....right?   I will turn on the other machine and listen again on headphones.

Funny how sometimes we get a block and then it all comes together later. This one was worth the wait.

Great job. I don't need to comment on your mixing skills as I could probably take lessons from you on that. The song is well put together in all aspects.

I am of the impatient sort and so by 3:00 I was starting to get figity, that's not just your tune but almost any tune. The thing you added a little after 2:00 made it carry well and kept it interesting.

    James,

I always listen to your songs for pure enjoyment because your rarely give anything to criticize in performance or mix.   This is really well done, and a damn good song.   The vocal layering is super pro, mix is good, guitars are great, and it is so interesting to listen to, never boring, never monotonous.   Good one.

yes... I did listen on cans yesterday. I was listening to see what the bottom end sounded like because on the computer speakers it was very hard to hear any bottom.

In the cans there is a reasonable amount of very well defined bottom end. My personal pref would have been several DB more...... because I like a big fat bottom end...... on music....and not much of anything else.

You did a very nice job. No major crits since it sounded very well done.

I like the story how this sat for quite some time, unfinished and then the spark that gave the inspiration came and waaa laaa , it got finished in short order. I love it when things happen like that. I've had several songs like that recently.

Like Guitarhacker, its cool how what appeared like a cul de sac in terms of finishing the song was quickly rejuvenated in the space of a couple of minutes, I love when something unknown happens like that.

I'm familiar with this badboy (nice simple piano additions btw) and it certainly has direction and a theme now.

    No mix crits.

Trademark yoyo guitars and love the vocal layerings.

Production sounds ace . I've listened 5 times now - probably the hookiest tune I've heard from you the thing that struck me is it felt longer than it actually is - can't really say why or if that's good or bad, just seemed longer than the 3:36 for some reason.

Geez, what a blow out job on this, James.... you put this one right out of the park (deep center field at that).  I'm floored... it was that kinda' good great!  How great was it?  About 99.99% great.  So what was the missing .01% ?

Think of these ideas as compliments rather than crits because both had to do with me wanting to hear MORE of something.  The guitar intro is classicly great, and I would have liked it to be just a tad more 'in your face.'  It sets up the whole tune... blast it and let 'em know you're coming.  The other thing is that when you're singing the T-e-o-oh part you've got this absolutely infectious little piano riff going on, and I'd love to see you ride that track up a bit more there.

I loved it.  This should be on the radio... I do hope you're running with it.  Congratz on a spectaular outting with this tune.

So how's the weather back on LawnGuyLand?

This production had about a million automation lanes. I busted my behind on this one. And I really did a number on the drums...for the first time, I got into the power of Superior Drummer and while a bear to work with, the results were worth it. Glad you noticed it.

Ya know, I kinda felt the same way. Maybe due to repetition, maybe due to a lot of similar elements going on throughout. By the time it gets to the bridge, it does feel longer than 2:00. I do think that since I really only have two and a half short verses that it may not give enough space in between choruses.

I cannot tell you how difficult it was to fit that piano in with all those effected guitar lines going on. I must have tried 50 different patches on it before I ended up going with a pretty basic patch, but mono'd it. I had a reverb bus that I put a lot of the keys through. The piano in the bridge is completely different and in stereo. LI is great: on vacation for 16 days, weather 82, water temp 80, lots of sunshine. Life is good down at the beach. Heading out to the East End and Montauk next week.

+ + + + 1---- did you play the guitar - -- if so how did you record it mic or DI???
Yeah, that was my guitar playing. I DI every guitar and bass track, playing live with POD X3, but recording dry. The six different guitars are either POD Farm or Amplitube Fender modded patches.
I am not a good enough guitar player (to my standards at least) to do much live amp recording...I am just too sloppy.

Very cool, fresh sounding song with a definite "Police" vibe!

Great instrumental performances and dynamite layered vocals with a nice, crisp sounding mix.  As always, very unique sounding with your trademark style clearly stamped on it.

James, this is an awesome work, from all aspects.  I  personally love the break around 2:20, and the transitions.  Love the vox, great job there and the BGV really impressed me as well.   Solid on all fronts!   Way to go on the production, and thanks for sharing!!     -John
