Faithfully

Here's my attempt at one of my favorite arena rock ballads (I'm a sucker for these types of songs!)  I've been working on singing "lighter" up high, which was really hard at first, as I normally belt out high notes.  This one took a while to settle in my voice and I'm still working on it.  This song also gave me the opportunity to work out some more of Neal Schon's unique blues licks, which are a lot of fun to play.  Any comments good or bad will be appreciated.

I thought it was so cool when I saw the title, and I know you've done some killer Journey tunes in the past.

Impressive... I would EQ that piano a little brighter? The guitars sound great. The vocals are amazing. But I checked and I was listening to the low-fi version, the high fi version seemed to have a brighter piano? And seemed to fit perfectly.

Amazing performances and recording, truly amazing. Steve Perry is "no joke..." So to cover one of his so "faithfully" is really impressive.

Robby - Thank you.  Funny thing about that piano is that originally I copied the piano tracks by way of track templates and the original piano wasn't bright at all.  Come to find out that there is a bug in X2 with track templates.  Not only did it not load the correct True Piano preset (which was bright) but it flat lined the EQ settings (which were also brighter).  So I fixed it and the piano sounded better.

Herb - glad you enjoyed it.  thanks for commenting.

Great vocals! I feel we're having an eightys moment together! Hahaha. I sometimes miss the big lush reverbs of the 80's. I've been really loving ValhallaVintageVerb for getting those. Your guitar really captures that Neil Schon ( Spelled wrong?) tone very well. How did you record that? Great job!

Very nice work Geno! Like your guitar tone a lot, and awesome job on the vocals. You have a great voice! I thought the delay mix on the lead guitar was just a touch heavy during the verses(just my opinion), but not distracting or anything. Overall I think you nailed it! Great mix! Now, I have to go check out more of your songs! Well done!

Clint: Ha - yeah those 80's eighties moments!  I'll check out Valhalla Vintage verb.  Thanks for your comments. I play and monitor my guitar through a PodX3 while the signal is printed dry.  I then process the signal with PodFarm 2.5 with just and amp model and speaker model.  No stomp boxes.  After that I'm using EQ and a stereo signal generator to get the mono guitar signal spread out in the stereo spectrum.  And then I use the old VanHalen type ping pong delay (sonitus) for that large Arena type sound.

Leadfoot - thanks for the comments!  I agree with you on the delay.  It is there all throughout and I've not yet created automation to turn it up and down appropriately (out of laziness!)

yorolpal - thanks for listening and commenting.

    Geno,
I really like your take on this.  Similar to the original but some nice, new modern twists throughout.  Really fine work.  I did hear one funky snare hit or double snare hit around 3:32.  I can tell you have been working on your drum mixes though, quite good as the sound is very natural, almost with a hint of a live feel to them.  Guitar sounds great as always, as do the vocals.

    Hey, Geno,

This cover is PURE DYNAMITE, brother!

Excellent work on the vocals and great job capturing Schon's guitar tone and solo work.  Over the years in my cover bands, we probably played 20 or more Journey songs, and I always thought he was underrated as a guitar player.  I liked his playing since the early Santana days right through HSAS and Bad English, as well as Journey.

Great stuff, Geno, have a good one, buddy!

no offence, but it seems like a waste of time & energy, after listening to some of your original tunes like "You Can Be Free"...  now that composition/production has real value...  just my opinion...
