ORIGINAL: ohhey I just assumed by the number of them available and the price that they were all fakes. I had no idea it was so widespread, but thatt explains a lot of things. I keep seeing new "SM58" and "SM57" mics with a Buy It Now price of $50. I came this close to buying one once. But jeez, those counterfeiters are pretty stupid. Why copy a SM58 for a few bucks profit when they could just as easily make a Neumann copy and make a few grand a pop? Oh well Like the guy says in Casablanca, "This place ees full of wultures... fulllll of wultures...."

That is a Radioshack mic (you can see the letters) with a 58 style grill. What BS

I would never buy a SM58 or SM57 off e-bay. + 1 Aren't they already cheap enough? Picking up a used pedal at the local Used-Crap-O-Rama is one thing, but do you really want something that various mystery people have breathed and spat on? Sometimes it's best to bite the bullet and flat-out buy something new from a reputable dealer. Along with tampons and prescription medications, I'd have to add microphones to that list.

A clever edit has certainly put an unsavory spin on what I said. For the record, I'd like to point out that I'm never actually in the room while strangers are breathing and spitting on my tampons.

A word about the SM58... even though they may not have the best sound quality, you gotta love a mic that you can bash into the stage and not miss a beat. From a Roger Daltrey interview interview: "I took the mike up in front of the crowd and said, “these are the best mics in the world because you can do this!†and I literally slammed it on the floor with as much force as I could muster. The crowd just sat there in horror. I bent over and calmly picked it up and carried on speaking. It was still perfect. Now if you’re someone from Shure, you can’t have a better act than that. It was a dangerous stunt to pull but it proved my point. The mic sounded exactly the same after I hurled it to the floor as it did before. What more could a rock singer need?" Roger Daltrey's beat up SM58:

Note the "seller" on the ebay page... "lilgirl"? and no feedback. Never ever buy from Ebay from an seller with no seller feedback.

Just for laughs I sent "lilgril" a question, politely asking where the mic came from and if it is a genuine Shure (since, as rumley spotted, it's an obvious Radio Shack!). If I get a reply it oughta be a hoot...

Look at their other auctions. Often they'll give you clues about what the seller is up to. Edited for typho. I mean typo.

Thr mic survived - I wonder about the woofers on the PA system he was using at that point - sounds like the audience may have ended up wearing the cones and voice coils.
