"Fame Train", Reggae-Pop track (Yoyo production and super fun video!!!)

Ok Guys,

I wrote this track a few months before christmas but decided it needed a makeover, so I enlisted my good friend Jim Yoyo to help me out. He took on the producer role and played many of the underlying instruments also.

I had an urge to make a video for a song for the last while so here it is (all off an iphone 4s too!) and had an absolute blast doing it as you'll see yourself! If you enjoyed it give it a like for me.

Fame Train

Cheers,
Cian

Very impressive on many levels.  The video is very clever and well laid out.  The mix is clear and clean, every element can easily be heard.  The only  thing that stood out to me was the lack of warmth in the mix.  I know it's popular now days to scoop out the "muddiness" with HPFs, but sometimes you can go too far.  Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Jame's mixing, but this is on the edge of brittleness to my ears.  Perhaps a little tube saturation in the right spots could be all you need.  Still, a very seriously, pro production.

    All the best,
    Lynn

Great production, video is very slick. Hate the song. It's superbly done, but one of those tunes that just annoyed the crap out of me for some reason, like the one you hear on holiday that you don't even like, but it won't leave your head. Surefire hit ! ;)

    Thanks all.

Rimshot - Glad you got something out of it. Yes the moving crowd does suit, if anything, it makes my song appear more popular than it actually is!

Lynn - Thanks, the vid took a lot of work. Its true that Jim goes for that kind of sound, I think this track needs it to accentuate the kick, snare and vocals, but certainly a little more warmth around the mids may give it a more organic sound.

Tony - Cheers Tones. Unlike some people, I need some help with my projects!!!

Kev, Janet, thanks for stopping by and giving your thoughts. It was fun for sure,

Tom, cheers. The video thing is as much work as music production. All I can say is dealing with 1080HD video on a laptop was A.G.O.N.Y at times! Id suggest using 720max and learn your software before delving in.

Paulo, no problem about the song at all, it aint gonna be no classic, just a pop track with a catchy chorus. Thanks again.

Biabdude and Shad, thanks and happy that you liked. I do like coming up with visual themes for music songs.

Well an excellent job on all facets.  Can't say much more than that, very pro.

It's a bit too happy for me that's my only criticism.

    Daryl, thanks.

Ben, thank you too. No question it is a pro production. In fairness, the video is verging on homosexual at times (hence the super happy vibe?!), but it is a different direction for me than my usual stuff which I am most satisfied with.

Thanks for checking it out Wookie.

Chuck glad it entertained you. No, it was all captured on an iphone, however it was edited in sony vegas, imagine trying to do that, tedious or what!

Philip, hope the rollercoaster was fast enough! thanks for you comments.

Daryl, thanks you too for stopping by, Im glad you enjoyed the lyrics, they are simple and straight forward, but none the less narrate the theme well.

One of the best things I've ever seen on the board.  Song-Great, Performances-Great,  Engineering-Great, Video-Great.  I'm sorry for sitting on the fence.  LOL!  Everything about this made me happy (even the wig :-).  Oh, one of the best sounding/produced bass lines too.  It was so present and full but not overpowering.  Loved it all!!  Liked it on YouTube and during second listen I figured out that it is the combo of the kick and bass that I was feeling.  Nice.

Thanks everyone for the positive comments on the production.  Cian is a great guy to work with cuz he writes super melodies and tracks, and then is real open to a producer's re-interpretation. He asked me a few months ago to do something with this song, but I kept getting involved in other tunes. I came up with the reggae-lite idea and he just jumped all over it. We changed the bass line ever so slightly and used a blended bass patch, added the guitars to give it an islands feel, and then added a judicious amount of samples to fill it out.

Something that I just thought about: we had a much longer intro originally, but using Herb's maxim (Don't bore us, get to the chorus) we shaved 10 seconds or so off it and it made it a much better song. If I wrote the song I would defend the long intro to the death...it is always best to let someone else take a listen and get feedback, even if you disagree with it.

Warren, thanks for hitting the like button. Was lucky to get Jim on board. Also glad you liked the wig, as a man who has a thinning hair line at such a young age, its quite refreshing to wear a nice thick mullet now and again!

Jim, as always thanks for you time with this and ceratainly over our many collabs, one thing that I have learned is that your own music isnt always as good as you think it is and being open to honest criticism is super important if you to wish to advance.

thepogue, thanks for stopping by brother and getting a bit of fun out of my track!

chasemcg, again thank you too for commenting, coming from a man who has some visual creating skills, this too means a lot.

I have to admit that I think you're the first reggae singer I've ever seen in a fully buttoned-up plaid.

    Julianna,

Many thanks for your super comments and for dropping a line for me on da tube!

You comment meant the most ya  know, since the reason why I do this stuff is I guess ultimately to make people happy and if its one second or 3 and half minutes of that then job done.

Again, Jim is awesome at this kind of work.

Just checked out your vid/music on your web page, that little project there is freakin awesome I will add!
