Fast Bounce Always results in noise

When I bounce to track or export audio to wave using fast bounce, the resulting file is noisy, crackles, sputters etc.  I have the 64 resolution ON.  I have a fast computer.  The CPU meter is not even close to max.  Why is the fast bounce always garbled?

GuitarHacker is right,I'm getting crappy results with fast bounce too,but thats with my laptop/on board realtek/ASIO4all,but it works fine[like everything] on my desktop, and thats with a lowly USB 1.1 UA25-EX,which actually works very well, considering.

My lap,is always "realtime" or nothing.

he's using an emu 1820m, which should be fine... could it be a particular plugin doesn't like fast bounce?

Try bypassing all plugins and using fast bounce. If that sounds fine then you have a plugin that doesn't play nice with fast bounce, and the process of elimination is your friend. :-)

It's probably good to note that a plugin that has issues with fast bounce may be an indication that other plugins from that manufacturer may have issues, too, so I would double-check that as well.

    Peace,

The sound card and driver would not be relevant in this case. More likely, there is a plugin in the chain that can't handle fast bounce. I have several of those (and one plugin that can't handle a slow bounce, just to complicate things further).

You may be able to alleviate the problem by increasing the BounceBufSizeMsec aud.ini setting. There was a bug in the initial release of X1 that resulted in this value being set to 30, which is way too small. Although fixed in X1a, you could still have that value in aud.ini. Try setting it to zero first, then if that doesn't work try setting it to 350.

ooops ... I missed that sound card in the sig....

yeah, agreed. Likely a plug that doesn't play well with the fast bounce. Switch to a real time (slower ) bounce and try it.

I had to do that on something a while back. I forget the details since fast bounce generally works well for me.

I use an older version of Melodyne, and it very much prefers a slow bounce.

It's usually better to Live bounce anyway for the best quality.

You could also try switching the 64 bit engine off and see if that improves performance whilst exporting/bouncing

Unless there's an issue with a particular plug-in, there is no difference in "quality" between fast and real-time bounce. Per Cakewalk's CTO, they use the same code, just not limited by the real-time clock (nor by the real-time buffer size if you set a value for BounceBufSizeMsec other than 0 as bitflipper mentioned).

If there's a problem with a plug-in, it will generally manifest in an obvious and extremely unpleasant way, not a subtle difference in quality.

You can test for yourself that fast-bounce and real-time exports will null to silence when re-imported and played back with one inverted (being sure to freeze all synths and FX first to lock in any randomness that might be built in to their processing algorithms).

Because it's not limited by the burden of clocking buffers in real-time, fast-bounce is actually less error-prone than real-time.
