I was looking at this. The thing sounds really good and the ability for the user to make his own synth with the modules is interesting.

So I d/l the manual and found out Win10 users need to install Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2017 and also 2012. I went to the link for the MS website. I was asked to login to my MS account and then I needed to create a account for VS (it's free).

At that point I said * it, it ain't worth it.

Since those C++ libraries are used by numerous other plugins - you probably already have them installed.

It sounds good don't it!! : )

Steven I was thinking the same thing. But didn't want to spend the $11 on something I can't use. It would have to be on my Music PC. And I do have a lot of C++ redistributables installed on it already. Not sure if I have a 2012 on it though.

Nice synth,
Installed on an old Vostro quad core with 6 GB RAM.
Turned Reaper into ashes, but runs great in Bandlab... One of the rare times I've seen this scenario.
Devs are very responsive and working on releasing a lighter RAM use version next week to help hobble Reaper along.

Well I did pick this up yesterday with the thought that I must have enough C++ redistributables installed. Have not had the chance to install yet but it's good to see that others are having success installing/running without any major trouble.

@abacab: That's why I haven't installed it yet. I just ain't got the time and if I did install I'd be playing with it!! And I just ain't got the time right now.

Here's a good link for getting the C++ libraries without all the hassle. Dev says that 2012 and 2017 both have to be installed if you don't have already.

I run Windows 10 1709 and apparently already had the required C++ libs aboard this machine.  Didn't have to add anything to make this work.  I recall installing another plugin earlier this year that had an installer .exe that dumped in any C++ library per-requisites needed at that time.  Probably a few others added to the pile as well.

To see what you already have just look in Windows Control Panel > Programs and Features, and scroll down until you see entries for 'Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable'.  If you already have them installed, you don't need to bother downloading anything else.

It is a CPU hog for sure, as the manual (115 page "quick start", LOL) states in Chapter 14 'CPU Management':

Fathom places high demands on your CPU compared to other software synthesizers.
There are several reasons for this:

Per Sample Modulations
With very few exceptions, most modulations in Fathom are performed per individual
sample not per sample block. This provides an extreme level of resolution in modulations
at the expense of CPU cycles.

It does sound good though!  It would be ironic if an $11 synth cost me a new CPU, LOL!

Fast evolution of fixes by a responsive and responsible developer. Says a lot about the integrity of support.
Reaper issues fixed with latest release and a less CPU intensive version in the works.
Excellent synth.

That will be great!  Simple patches don't present a problem, but with up to 20 modules available, a complex patch quickly brings my CPU to its knees.  U-he Diva seems rather "light" by comparison!

Re: Fathon Pro for $11...almost over 2018/07/06 15:06:43 (permalink)
Abacab, the less CPU intensive version is still on the table but less of a priority right now according to the dev. My system is ancient so will not run the heavier pads without breaking up. A note to their support from you would be great so they hear this from others as well.

Grem, the updates for $2.50 are delivered in an encrypted zip file. The original installation has all the peripheral files with the dll's. The upgrades are just the updated dll's with an unlock password.
Still a great deal for $12 if your system is strong enough to handle it.

And what's that update for $2.50 about? I thought updates were free?

https://www.fathomsynth.com/updates

Software Upgrades
Software upgrades cost $2.50.
Paying for upgrades is voluntary. The paid upgrade and free download are identical. However, users purchasing the upgrade usually have access to the upgrade features a week before the public release.
The password has changed starting with version 2.12. Please email support for the new password and make sure your email matches the original purchase email.

How Much Should I Contribute?
We depend on upgrade contributions to pay for Fathom's regular feature development.
If you use Fathom regularly as one of your primary software synthesizers we recommend you purchase a total of four upgrades per year ($10.00).
Make your own decision about which upgrades you purchase based on this usage and how much you want to see new features added to Fathom.

I tried a few of the suggestions made by the dev to reduce some of the more demanding settings (Audio Interpolation, Detune Interpolation, Detune Precision, etc.), as well as bumping up my audio buffers, and that seems to have helped a bit.

For the more complex sounds, the load seems to multiply depending on how many modules are active, the modulations used, and the amount of polyphony that you need.

I wouldn't say my system is ancient, but it is six year old tech, a 3rd gen Intel Core i3.  It can run several instances of Diva, but again, that line blurs with higher quality and more polyphony used, etc.

I think that because Fathom is still new, it may need some performance tuning, especially since this still appears to be a rolling beta test at the moment.  Not knocking it, because it is very cool, and I'm sure it will be awesome when it matures a bit!
