Vintech X73i preamp. Sounds fantastic! A Neve clone without all of the cost. And the best costomer service around. The owner called me back afterhours to help me fix a problem with a new unit and ended up Fedex'ing a replacement the next day without a credit card or anything.

I have a Mary Kaye Closet Classic that I play alot. It is a totally different sound though. The 56 is much deeper and woolier. The 56 has a big V neck too, which is kind of nice. ORIGINAL: pgw ORIGINAL: chauncey_gardner Nice. I have a 56. Yup, the oldies are cool - Q: have you compared it to the new-made customshop ´56´s? I tested a customshop-relic ´59 ( at a store ) a couple of months ago, it felt pretty good, but nothing like mine - partly due to my original having a well worn maple neck & the relic having a rosewood neck. It was a really well built guitar, but I don´t think it should be advertised as an exact replica. Didn´t remind me of my buddy´s ´60 or ´61 (both RW necks off course) either, the neck was noticably thicker. Off course there may be differencies between the relic´s too, just like the originals. I´m just curious. Cheers Per

gnie I didn't know you were a modular guy (or girl). I have a Modcan with 3 racks high * 3 racks wide (9 of their 12 or so module mini-racks) chock full. You should try a Zeroscillator if they make them in your format. They are pretty wicked. I love my modcan. Then again, I like 1/4" better than bananas or 1/8". Just a users preference more than anything else. I have a roland GR 700/707 combo. I have been outbid a few times on the GR300. I like their simplicity.

Obviously they are better at storing presets (hah) but I don't think they are as intuitive or inspirational. There is that mad-scientist like mentality that evolves when I am patching my modcan. The music sounds like it too.

Crybaby Wah I like Guitar Rig and Amplitude great for tone etc, especially at 3 in the morning, but for Wah you have to use the real thing. I dug out my wah the other day, to do a subtle sort of washy guitar part to bed out a track, and how much fun did i have with that. There is VST's for this sort of thing, but why sit there programming it when you can have so much more fun doing it for real. PS I have since grown a moustache and started talking in a swedish accent.

My favorite hardware is my computer--d'oh, just kidding. My favorite (and at my age I've had a lot) is my Godin LGXT guitar with the Roland GR-20 guitar synth. I have always had to rely on loops to lay my bass lines in Sonar, but I am in the middle of a project where I actually used the Godin and Roland to "play" the bass line. Sounds real!! sd

jinga Go for an Ibanez IMG 2010 And A Roland GR300. No where near the latest in technology, but they track wonderfully. I ahve a GR700/707 and it tracks good, but not as good as the 300. I have a GR1 and I hate it. Of course, I don't want my guitar synth to sound like a tuba. I dont want it to sound like a xylophone. I dont want it to sound like an atomic bomb. I want my guitar synth to sound like a synth. And the GR300 is probably the best at that out there. It is funny how sometimes things combe back around like again and again, like a bad casserole on a lazy susan. (That is me working on horrible metaphors).

Like razor, I use a Godin for my guitar synths. I'm happy enough with the way it plays directly through the dedicated hardware, but conversion to midi is disappointing. Usually requires touch up work. This seems to be pretty standard with guitar interfaces. My GR-33 is rather limited as a synth, and the GR-50 is nice, but ridiculous to program.

ORIGINAL: jinga8 Roland GR-20 guitar synth. Hey Razor (or anyone), I have never had the opportunity to try a Guitar Synth. How reliable/accurate are they? I am intrigued, just not enough to doll out the dough sight unseen (unheard?)... There are two answers. My guitar buddy bought the strap on midi deal for his Les Paul and even had the tracking professionally tuned, but it never liked his playing style (blues) and he trashed it. The LGXT, on the other hand, has a built-in midi dealy bob and my same friend played it (out of the box) and loved it. I have not had any tracking issues--just, I am not a good enough guitarist to make the violins sound like a violinist, etc. The sounds are there, but the scales are not. Fun though. I'll upload the tune to my myspace site when I'm done and you can single out the bass if you like.
