Favorite Rags?

Hi
I think I have at one time subscribed to about every music magazine out there at some point. Nowdays, I read
Sound on Sound
Future Music
Vintage Guitar
and that is about all.

SOS and FM have pretty good reviews, but they seem biased towards EU products. Vintage Guitar - well there isn't a competitor there.

For various reasons, I gave up on EM, HS, Keyboard, Guitar Player, EQ, ...

I want gear reviews - largely unbiased and lots of them - and techniques. I really like shoot-outs, where 10 near-fields are A/B'd over a couple of issues - and stuff like that.

An occasional artist review is cool too.

Dont care about music for websites, games...though I could see why others might.

The Brit mags are expensive, but they are pretty good.

What do you read and why?

Sonica dual core 3.4 GHz with 2GB ram, 2-300GB audio drives 1-80Gb system drive, RME DIGI 9652, Sonar 6 PE, Mackie D8B, 2x MOTU MTP AV USB, TC Powercore Firewire, UAD1, vintage synths, Modcan modular, guitars, outboard gear,

I like my new rags. They are really soft and fluffy, where as my old rags aren't so soft anymore. Not sure the brand, sorry, but I bought them at Macy's.

I forgot to add Weekly World News.

Too many magazines try to make you believe they know what they are talking about. WWN - hey - I am certain they know. After all, someone had to create those stories.

Sound on sound is the only mag for me.
I used to buy future music until they started putting pretty models, holding synths, on the cover.
It looked like a tacky men's rag so i avoided it from then on.

I used to have Computer Music. For me, they were a bit more basic than I was looking for, though I do think they fill a very important role. They are very VST oriented. I like outboard gear.

Some of the things they gave away with the subscription were pretty cool.

How do I subscribe to future music, anyway? I do like what they have to offer... but the link to subscribe is dead.

I'll second Computer Music - the DVD each month contains tons of samples and a new vst intrument (in addition to the standard bunch they always include). I initially bought it for the monthly dvd's, but learned a bunch about mixing and producing instead.

TapeOp, Sound on Sound, ComputerMusic now and again - but I agree they can sometimes be FAR too basic. Sometimes I need that though! lol

The only ones I've paid attention to lately are Sound on Sound, and Wire. I've checked out TapeOp occasionally, and just got a free subscription to it [though haven't seen a copy as of yet]. EQ never does much for me. Recording, Electronic Musician, Keyboard, and the various 'Guitar' things seem to have gone into the mode of just giving enough to keep readers needing more.

So why don't we have something as authoratative as SOS here stateside. Its not like it is an ad free mag. I subscribe because it is too hard to find and expensive as being a coke addict.
