Favorite bands that SHOULD have been huge, but weren't

I nominate Toronto's Klaatu, whose 1977 concept album "Hope" I consider to be in the same league with "Dark Side of the Moon". The band had great songwriting, great musicianship, but only bumped the charts a couple times and never had a big hit.

Honorable mention to Coliseum, a British blues/rock band with extraordinary musicianship that enjoyed brief popularity in England and Germany in the early 70's but is hardly known at all in North America. Saw them live in Munich, 1971. Best live concert I ever saw in Europe, and that includes some killer live acts such as Deep Purple, ELP and the Moody Blues.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I remember them performing on a late night TV show here and being impressed but never heard of them since.

Thanks for that mention Bit!  I've never heard of the before, but they sound great (and have been added to my "Need to get" list).

And same to James about Thunder.

The CANDYMEN (most of them went on to form ARS)

White Witch (also Noah's Ark part of which evolved into Captain Beyond who also should have been bigger)

I think most of these kinds of bands were made up of awesome players without the right song at the right time.

Two bands I though should have been bigger than they were at the time.....

    Wishbone Ash and Humble Pie.

Both were bands with some excellent guitar playing and twin lead playing.

I have some of their music on my MP3 player and the tone and playing still blows me away.

    just my 2 cents.

I think the list should be restricted to bands which have either folded or from which someone has died. Anybody else still has a chance to make it big.

I said a chance. I did not specify how long a shot it might be.

Anvil - One of the hardest working bands out there, still plugging away today, and never quite made it big.

My vote goes for the band Trillion back around 78-80 time frame. Their album 'Clear Approach' has some great stuff. Had the pleasure of seeing them live in a club. My band friends and I all got hooked on them at the time. Still enjoy a listen today.

Most of my favorite bands shouldn't have been huge, but were. It's the band they were before they got huge that deserves recognition.

Red Hot Chili Peppers, for example. A pity to see a band that was so funky ending up being so sloppy after they unlocked Pandora's box w/ Under the Bridge.

Re: Fireballet. I guess there should really be two sub-lists: favorite bands that had the prerequisite factors to make it big, and favorite bands that were never going to make it big and never intended to. Fireballet falls into the latter subcategory, I think.

OTOH, who would have ever thought that Chip Davis would eventually buy his own airplane from pop symphonic Christmas music?
