I was never keen on playing cover tunes, but I enjoyed doing Lou Gramm's 'Midnight Blue', John Mellencamp's 'Small Town' Dr Feelgood's 'Milk and Alcohol' and Free's 'Walk in my Shadow'.

One day I'll persuade Strummy to join me in doing 'Babylon's Burning' by The Ruts, or 'Arena' by the Skids.

Had a blast a few years back doing John Hiatt's 'Paper Thin' with Randy Prier, loved that.

And to avoid at all costs:
    • Metallica - Whisky In The Jar (Traditional Irish Folk Song; but they obviously tried, and miserably failed, to cover Thin Lizzy's excellent version)
    • U2 + Green Day - The Saints Are Coming (The Skids; dear old Stuart Adamson must be spinning in his grave)
    • Any cover by the Sex Pistols after Lydon was sacked

Among my favorite covers to play live, back in the days:

Killing in the Name of - Rage Against the Machine (best song to close a show).

The River - The Tea Party (or pretty much anything by them, cause it worked w/ my voice and my style as a guitar player - plus, pulling out the violin bow for "Save Me" really got the attention ;) )

    Roadhouse Blues - The Doors

I remember playing Sad But True (Metallica) a couple of times w/ another band too - lots of fun as long as the PA didn't suck. :)

    TCB - Tea, Cats, Books...

Cowboy Song/Boys are Back in Town - Thin Lizzy
Waiting for an Alibi/Jailbreak - Thin Lizzy

Whiskey in the Jar - Thin Lizzy

Over the Hill - Gary Moore

Friday on my Mind - Gary Moore

    Pink Panther - Henry Mancini

Plus a few other pub cd box regulers. We stopped playing Roadhouse Blues some time ago, when we changed singers. Two good moves !!!

    Cheers,
    Jerry

LOL!! I actually always liked "Run to You". So much so, I felt the need to cover it for fun. Not sure I've ever shared this, but I always like to put a spin on covers to sort of make them fresh. Sometimes you do it justice, other times you ruin the song..lol..but it's still pretty fun. I did this whole thing in like 6 hours...recording, mix, master in 2009. I always felt this song would sound good heavied up a bit. Still a fun tune to play eventhough I ruined it. :)

Cover tunes should depend on what region you're in for the gig. What's your audience, what do they like. It takes some investigation. Especially nowadays. Most anyone will like a huge classic, anywhere. But, making friends, is something a bit different.
