Favorite use for Pro Channel

Probably my new favorite use for the Pro Channel is using the 4k compressor on the master with the wet/dry set to 40%. This enables me to raise the RMS level without squashing transients, which I tend to do later in the mastering process anyways. It makes for a meaty mix.

It's also a favorite because it is easy and only on one track, which means the issues with the Pro Channel randomly deciding to enable/disable modules is easy to fix. Doing that with every track is ridiculous.

Peace,

Tunes

For the record, regarding the sound quality of the 4k compressors out there that I've tried, I rank them:

    1. UAD SSL Comp
    2. Waves SSL Comp
    3. Pro Channel 4k Comp

I haven't tried the Duende versions so I can't comment here on that. What I will say is that I like using the Pro Channel 4k with the wet/dry mix at 40% as mentioned, then using the UAD version as further mix "glue" before limiting.

Have you tried the Glue from Cytomic and if so how do you rank it to the others? I have the Glue and really love it, used the Liquid Mix 4k preset before but the Glue have really replaced it. I also have, and like, the PC in X1 and it's nice but not as nice. Haven't tried the waves or uad versions though.

Sadly very reduced studio equipment as it is... ASUS G750J, 8 gb RAM, Win8, Roland Quad Capture.

I've started recommending that everyone turn up the Gloss.

    I still haven't decided if I'm going to use 4k or PC76.

    best regards,

I haven't tried The Glue but I've heard fantastic things about it. Regarding the PC76 it is a pretty good sounding compressor. For an 1176 plugin I don't think it gets better than the 1176LN from UAD. If you're looking specifically for the 1176 sound then the hardware or the UAD plugin are the best out there. That said, when running low on UAD DSP I don't feel bad using the PC76 for instruments. For vocals or percussion I won't substitute.

Regarding the 4k the UAD version just sounds cleaner and punchier than the Waves or Pro Channel version.

Mike, you're right about the Gloss setting- it's great on a lot of things, especially cymbals, often acoustic guitars, pianos, even snare/toms depending on the style of music/production desired. I've taken to using a similar curve on my master buss and it sounds great as long as I have properly treated sibilance in the vocals first.

I'm still trying to decide if there is an EQ mode that takes the place of the API 560 Waves plugin for Electric Guitars.

I've found the Tube Saturation is also great on a lot of things if not overdone. It brings a lot of life to Toms especially. My problem with using the Pro Channel is that it seems to forget its brains sometimes and just doesn't process sound through some modules even if they are turned on in the UI. I just can't get myself to police it, so I don't use it as much as I'd like now that I've run into this.

    Peace,
