Feature Request: "Hide Take" buttons on lanes and built in Take Manager on tracks. Yes?

Above the "New Lane" and "Delete Lane" buttons on the individual Take Lanes it would sure be nice to have a "Hide Lane" button so a lane that has material you may want to use but don't want to currently look at can be hidden to save screenspace (while tracking or whatever).

Then a button on the parent track that opens a "Lanes Manager" that shows a list of all take lanes in the track and their status (shown/hidden/muted/etc). Then you can "unhide" your lanes there. Basically like a mini Track Manager for Take Lanes.

It would sure make my life easier with what I'm currently doing. In other news... X3 is still working like a champ here.

Cheers.

    +1 or 2

A "Hide Lane" option is probably my first choice for Lane enhancements.

I hadn't thought of a Lane Manager dialog though - that's a good idea IMO too!

    Beepster - great suggestion!

Would there be any way to tell if the track contains hidden tracks without opening the lane manager? Unlike tracks, the number field is editable so missing numbers don't necessarily mean that there are hidden lanes.

Tak... maybe the "take manager" button could go "green" or some other color if there were hidden takes...

Hi, guys. Hope everyone is good. Was gonna reply to this this morning but the darned forum was borking out.

So, JulienX... I was considering your comment last night and I think what I would like is for the on track "Lane Manager" button (that would open the lane manager for the track) to have a number on it reflecting how many lanes are currently hidden.

Then I was considering possible alternate functions that could be access by holding keyboard modifiers while clicking the button to make it more useful.

A simple left click on the button would open the Take Lane Manager.

The following bindings are just examples to illustrate possible functions but all would require a click on the Take Lane Manager button...

Shift + Left Click + Left Click release = Show All Hidden Lanes.

A second Shift + Left Click + Left Click release would hide all the previously hidden Lanes PROVIDED no new lanes have been hidden. If you hide a lane then the previous Hidden Lanes status is overrided.

Ctrl + Left Click (Hold) = Toggle Hidden Take Lanes. This would temporarily show hidden Take Lanes and when released would hide them again. That way you can just take a peek at a track contains.

    And my personal favorite...

Alt + Left Click = Show Only Lanes Used. This would automagically remove any lanes not currently being used in the parent track so unused material is hidden. That way you can track and comp in new stuff to the parent track then perform this function to get rid of previous gack on the fly. As you add new material it'll build up as usual but when you want to free up screen space you just use this and clear up unused material.

Man... that would be a dream. I'm also have an issue with the multi select feature on Take Lanes and perhaps it has been corrected in the patches (I'm still on C) and I'm considering a separate thread for it. Basically when I Multi Select multiple lanes in a track I am unable to hold Ctrl and mute them all like I can with tracks. It's annoying. Sometimes I want silence a bunch of takes at the same time and I have to press each lane's individual Mute buttons to do it. It is an oddity of my personal workflow but I gotta wonder what the multi select on Take Lanes is even for at this point. Perhaps it was just coded in for future versions or there are other features that use it but it would be nice to  Multi Select and Mute.

Also... hi, stevec, lawa, Vastman and John. CHEERS!

I second this.... Theres deffo room for improvement on take lanes....

I still havent got my head around them properly. Its a feature thats AMAZING in theory but just needs a bit of ironing out.

I get issues on loop recording with take lanes and I stop the takes and everything is shunted across by a few bars upon stopping so I have gone back to "one take wonder" recording.

A "Take Lane" manager sounds bloody awesome tho and gets my thumbs up.

Hiya, Mark. How's it going? Working on some new tunage I think you may like... might take a while to complete though.

So guys... I'm considering just sending this thread in a feature request. Might be better if someone with a little more weight does it though.

I also still think we need the Audition level thingie to be a Fader instead of the current fixed three level options now that Comping is the new way of editing. When I'm Fast Comping I do not want the other tracks lower in volume and/or it would be nice to find my OWN comfortable level. Currently I'm having to adjust my track or bus levels to compensate for the drop in volume when Fast Comping.

So yeah... love Take Lanes and have since X2 and even more so in X3 but there are a couple of seemingly half baked things going on that could be improved.

We're ALMOST there. Keep up the good work, Baker dudes.

Good ideas. Now, I'm actually giving this FR a big +1 but only because of one reason. Currently, even if you mute the clip or mute the lane itself, the clip muted still appears in the main track when lanes are collapsed. This isn't good if you want to keep idea clips or alternative takes in the same track for later use (until then you don't want to see them in the main track, do you?). Also, I sometimes encounter a strange bug where I select a clip in the main track (with lanes collapsed) but it actually selects a muted clip hidden behind it. So, if the "Hide Take" feature is implemented, I'm sure clips in hidden lanes will NOT show up in the main track at all. That would really be helpful.

    Tak T.

Maybe I'll send it off this afternoon. That last part about muted clips showing up in the parent track is weird. I haven't really seen that behavior. I thought if a range on the timeline was silent but had muted material (clip mute) that that section of the parent track remained blank. I'll check that out later.

As far as muted clips being drawn to the surface when working with the parent track... well that's gotta be a bug or something. Kind of weird but it reminds me almost of how my old DAW (and I'll mention it just for the purpose of this convo... Nuendo2) handled takes. Everything would track into the same trackspace and whatever take was "On Top" was what was audible/editable. So the last clip recorded would automatically go on top and muted everything recorded earlier. You accessed previous takes by right clicking on on the track/clip area and a numbered list popped up. Then you selected from that list to bring older takes to the top which changed the list priority. The clip that was previously on top now goes down to number two and number two goes to number three, etc. That way if you had let's say the beginning half of a song take that was good but the ending was bad and another where the ending was good but the beginning was bad or you just punched in then you would make sure those two takes were on top and you'd slip edit the clips to the right spot. It was a pretty cool system and personally I would mind seeing something like that for editing in the parent track so you could edit/audition with the Take Lanes closed. This would go well with the Flatten Comp feature. You could put together a few versions of the entire song using Flatten Comp, close the Take Lanes to save screenspace then cycle through your takes to see which you like best or mix and match with slip editing. That with a Hide Takes function you could have a setting to make it so only the flattened versions are shown (or all if you want) and bingo bango... old school but intuitive and minimalistic editing AND the fancy shmancy Take Lanes comping method for more intricate work.

But that's just dreaming right now. The Hide functions I mentioned earlier would be mmore than enough to make this old Beep happy.

    Cheers.
