Feeling P5

Just watched a couple of free demo videos for some Reason 3 training. I don't know there's something about Reason I just can't get into. Sort of like they take the "virtual rack" thing to extremes. 20 years ago I drooled over real racks like that. But now, who cares?

The fact is that P5 is just a way hipper product. I've always felt that way, ever since the first P5 came out.

And from watching the trailer for it, as well as listening to DA's award winning track, I'm hearing enough feel and punch from the drums to put my issues with those to rest.

There's a Cakewalk clinic coming to my town soon. If they offer a good deal on P5, I'll probably pick it up. Truth is I really would dig being a part of the P5 community. I already own Sonar 4 Home Studio, but it doesn't really inspire me to sit down and be creative. According to many of you, P5 does.

So issues with "feel" and "punchiness" be damned. P5 has my vote. And when v3 comes around (obviously this is a "when" and not and "if") it can only get better.

yes youre right in a way rick,

I have used reason 2.5 and p5 and guess which one i dont use
Reason thats the one. Not so legal version of reason (H2O), but not really my kind of workflow.
Saw p5 at a demo day at my local retailer, bought it, ditched reason H2O version, happy boy.

thank god for "try before buy" versions.

Edit: Dont u think its cool i bought p5 without going the illegal way of demo-ing it? I was so convinced this was the right app for me and it still is. And i'm really excited about the coming maintance and or update release. Maybe it will be even more flexible than Ableton's Live5. (Live5 also cool but don't like the layout).

    Greets,

    NTH.

I can wholeheartedly agree with both of u there.

Ive tried using Reason and it jsut doest work for me (save with doing drums). Ive also tried Live5 but I just didnt connect with it like I did with P5.

P5 is great and definately works as a do-it-all workstation. I can only hope for better things in the future with V2.5/3 coming out.

I did look at reason when it first came out, but i hated the sequencer so that killed it for me.

    Hey Rick,

When those clinics come to town P5 is usually $200. It's a very nice deal. I think when they do the "official" DimPro/Rapture clinic they will be running SONAR instead of P5V2. Personally I think they should do it right and rewire the stinks together.
I was introduced to Reason and SONAR at the same time and I chose SONAR and the artist formerly known as Fruity Loops (which cakewalk used to distribute). Fruity Loops lost out to SONAR updates and SONAR lost out to P5V2. That being said, I do have the privilege of accomplishing anything that can't be done in P5V2 w/in SONAR.

    have a good one

Hehe, glad you finally buy it Rick, you're gonna love it.
Ive been using a not-so-legal version of P5V1, and bought V2 in June, and I definetely don't regret it!
    and for 200$, it's a great deal.

TEO - Here's a quote from the e-mail they sent: "A Cakewalk product specialist will be on hand to take you on an in-depth guided tour of the Cakewalk Instruments using Project5, Cakewalk’s ground-breaking instrument host. Learn how to get the sounds you’re looking for from Rapture and Dimension Pro and discover the performance and sound-shaping capabilities that make them must-have instruments for Mac- and PC-based musicians and producers."

So that's EXACTLY the system I'm interested in. If I can get P5 for $200, upgrade to DPro for another $99, and then grab RAP for $200, then I've got the uber-workstation for $500.

Just thinking about it makes me want to create some tracks. This is the feeling I'm talking about that is lacking with Sonar 4 Home Studio XL. It just seems like a big, plodding, tractor or something. P5, especially w/ Dim Pro and Rapture seems more like a fun car you'd want to take a spin with on a Sunday with nothing else to do.

will check it out, but most likely will go for the Akai MPD24, since I have a long history with the MPC series.

Reason is more of a sound creating tool and less of a sequencer/audio recorder (hence huge emphasis on effects processing/mixing/signal routing).

P5 is the other way around more for composing than shaping sound (huge emphasis on piano roll/pattern/step sequencing).

Reason and P5 is probably better suited in conjunction with each other than viewing them as separate apps.

When I got legal access to P5-1 it had never occured to me to snag it. I had Sonar and a small contingent of softies for all the sonic mayhem I was up to at the time. At first it was odd but everything popped up in Sonar so I could play with it within my area of understanding. It is in fact a different way of doing things. But, I have since upped to P5-2 and added Dpro and Rapture to the mix.(I would have snagged the synths anyway as they are Rene's and he is very good at this :)+) and lets not forget the award winning team that worked on both. Chad you there?) So, Whatever you like is fine but I'm a P5 fan. It works for me and that's what matters on my end. It could be better. and I think it will be soon. Cake just makes em better at every version. They seem to strive for that. I like that. It keeps me comming back for more.

Yeah, Reason's sequencer is kinda crappy. There are better sequencers out there if you aren't going to rewire. I just use Reason as a synth now. There are better free vsti's than Subtractor out there, but Malstrom is really awesome (the one non-Rapture synth in my trance track Haven was Malstrom and it was hot!), the NNXT is a great sampler, and the redrum is my favorite drum sampler. Plus the WAAY light CPU usage, Reason is awesome for me (I usually have about 100 reason machines in my tracks). P5 is a great sequencer and Dimension is hot. I like both.

Thanks for the comparisons, guys. I am much more into a smokin' sequencer than a bunch of effects, even though the MClass does make Reason sound great. With DimPro and Rapture now available, P5 makes much more sense to me. I've watched the trailer, some demo videos, tutorials, etc... and I just like the workflow of the P5 sequencer(s).

I'm now starting to salivate considering they may offer it to me for $200 at the clinic. Maybe they'll offer a killer package deal - P5, DimPro, Rapture. Under $500 and I'm most likely in!

Im not getting the use out of it like I had planned but I eagerly awaiting the next version I have used it in conjunction with Sonar, but I use Sonar mainly, if they add keybindings for, or auto quantize then I'm all in, Project 5 can only go up from here, well worth the investment
