The point is that gear ends up looking like that despite all attempts to keep it nice, I don't believe for a moment, for example, Rory Gallagher ever tried to make his strat end up looking the way it did it was just battle damage plain and simple.

Spend 2 years working out of the back of a transit van and you'll have your own 'authentic' road aged guitar anyway especially if the £50 for a half decent case isn't a priority for your immediate hand to mouth survival.

I've always been saddened by the fact that I've never been to keep my best loved gear in showroom condition it always ends up battered and bruised anyway, why any one would pay a premium to fake that look just indicates to me that they really need to get out more.

Or as Bats put it but more succinctly.

LOL

edite: Here's an article just for anyone interested on the Fender custom shop RG strat.  I can understand the reasons for trying to clone the guitar, but where the finish has an effect on the playability or the sound defeats me.

I've heard it sounds and feels pretty good.
But the 'road-worn' fad reminds me of Vanilla Ice shaving his eyebrow and saying it happened in a gang fight.  Faux cred just adds another level of patheticness.

As for the Strummer differences, i'm betting Fender was scared of copyright violations from the sticker originators, left them off, and then realized that they weren't going to be anywhere close to Joe's anyway.

Having gone to all that trouble, why did they load it with a sparkly new scratch plate? And the pots are different as well.

What's really hilarious is to see a whole row of "road-worn" guitars on display. They are all identical, which makes them look ludicrous. I took a snapshot of such a display at the Fender exhibit at NAMM, but the glare on the glass made the photo illegible. But just imagine about 20 identical road-worn Teles in a row.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I just found this Matt - it appears you add the stickers and apply the stencils yourself!

Fender’s Mike Lewis showed the company’s Joe Strummer Telecaster model in honor of the late Clash guitarist. The pre-distressed guitars retail at $1,285; the first 1,500 sold come with an artwork kit including a stencil and stickers to customize the body. The parts come in an album cover designed by Shepard Fairey. Photo by Lynne Margolis.

All I can say is this: I have a roadworn. I could care less about the looks as it never leaves my house. It is the best guitar I've ever owned, and I've owned a lot.

Having said that, that Joe Strummer does look particularly half-ass. All I'm saying is that it might sound great.

We know that Fender can and does make guitars
that are top notch and for a very good price. Especially
if one considers what Gibson has done. I think they're
crazy for asking the prices I see on some of the LP's.

I think Fender tries to make one for everybody. If
there's a market for "road worn" and helps keep
Fender building and people employeed I'm all for it.
There are more Fender models that I'm not interested
in too.

adding...I think what they did with SRV was amazing.
To think that they can duplicate like that is...art. I
wouldn't mind being able to do that.

He most likely won't want the regurgitated Jonbouy 1986 Christmas special emission, sans chunks of frosting, though.
