File Compatability List

Is there a complete list of file types that are compatable with Sonar X1, including import from other DAW?

Online it says: "...AIF, Broadcast WAV, FLAC, SD2 (Sound Designer II), QuickTime video, and many other audio & video file formats"

And: "Collaborate with studios and musicians using DAWs like Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase, and more..."

Looking for a more comprehensive list that covers the above and fills in the gaps on the "many other" , "and more"...

Thanks!

Seriously, if there is one (something comprehensive) and I missed it - please point me to it, my bad.

Trial and error is not productive - I had a pile of video clips I wanted to score and could not add any. And ip4 and mp4 files apparently don't work either.

IF I had a list I could convert files before opening Sonar X1, not to mention I am working with people cross country on other DAW with different import and export options and letting them know a head of time what will work best would be a help.

    BUMP.
    Thanks

The project-files of different DAWs are not compatible with each other. Moving projects between them means usually exporting projects as OMF-files. SONAR supports OMF, but for example Pro Tools requires (at least used to require) a separately purchased
addition to use OMF. The wav-files that DAWs use in audio recording are normal wavs and can be moved around.

SONAR supports most audio-file formats, but not video. SONAR has no video-editing capabilities, and one shouldn't expect much from that side. AFAIK .avi is the one video format that works best there, but other users know better. I've never imported video into SONAR.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

    Kalle is 100% correct.

The project files between DAWs are not compatible, and sharing those simply won't work. But all the important audio files are supported. I understand you want a list - and I don't know of one myself, but WAV, AIFF, FLAC - well, those are the three most used so sharing those files between DAWs is a snap. Every DAW supports those three (every DAW I know of).

Export each track to an audio file (in Sonar this is fast and easy) and those files can then be imported/opened in any other DAW. The reverse from other DAWs to Sonar also works fine.

NOTE: Although the audio clips in the Audio Folder(s) can be read in other DAW's, they need to be organized and placed properly on timelines. For best results, just export each track as it's own file.

Working with how? If all you need is for them to load audio data, then you have no problem. If you want to tweak an effect on a track that has not been rendered and then let them un-tweak it, you are out of luck. There is no incentive for the various DAW makers to collaborate on a common data format. They would each individually benefit by you needing to buy their product in order to collaborate with someone else using their product. If there were a common format, there would be a race to the bottom on pricing because you would have an incentive to shop for the cheapest DAW, knowing that you could send your work to someone using the high priced DAW for final mixing if you needed help.

First, thank you for responding. I do appreciate people taking time to answer.
Kalle - I have looked into import/export of .OMF on a recent Protools project. It has been a great help.
Coda - I do know that nothing is 100% compatible between different DAWs or even different versions of the same DAW - but I don't claim to know what works best in general for most, so even recommending  WAV, AIFF, FLAC as consistent across most current platforms is a help.

But it doesn't give me a comprehensive list of what works.
    Why do I ask:
    1) I have older projects and samples across different formats that I would like to still use bits and pieces of. They are on various pieces of gear and 3 different PC's, using many odd bits of software.
    2) I am cataloging and in some cases remixing and remaster older pieces of work, again across various formats.
    3) I share ideas with musicians who I never know what they are working on, or what format they will send.
    4) I am collaborating with a few indie film and animation people, who also send me whatever they feel like.
    5) A current collaborative project uses archived audio and video, which sometimes takes a lot of effort to track down in the first place, if I don't have to convert everything, every time I get it, that would be awesome.
    6) People using MACs always assume what they use is universal, which is annoying and a pain in the ass.

What I would like to be able to do is know ahead of time what will definitely work, what might work, and what will not work - before I even try - so I can divide stuff into piles of : ready to go, ready to try if I got time, and convert it to something useful.
A trust worthy list, and the valued opinions of those of you experienced with the files and formats that can give your recommendations, would be an awesome tool. Hell just having a list to send people that says "hey if its not here, don't send it". Politely of course.

So I am going to keep poking at this. I have actually been surprised what does and does not work, especially in the browser.
As a point of reference when Cakewalk first came out as a sequencer a friend of mine running a studio in Boston called them up and had questions on the software since he was recording audio with it. They said "You're doing WHAT?".

It doesn't hurt to ask, and it only hurts a little to try. - Thanks!

I had hoped people would contribute input as to what in the above list works or doesn't from experience - as a resource.

As an addendum, perhaps people can contribute to "what works with video import?" - cause even though AVI, MOV, WMV should work - it is my experience that they don't consistently. Depending on whether Sonar X1 is running 32bit or 64bit, and your settings, certain codecs and settings within these video "containers" either make the file not import or import and freeze or crash.
. Recommendations on codecs, bit rate, frames, any conversion settings for video import into Sonar X1 64bit appreciated.

Also tips/tricks/setting recommendations for importing/exporting OMF to/from ProTools also appreviated

I have reposted this as I have had to do the above 2 (video and OMF) a lot the last couple of weeks with a success rate of : 85% EPIC FAIL

Rain Computers Ion Studio Custom PC Xeon 8-core 3.1ghz processor, Win7 Pro 64x, 24gb RAM, ATI Radeon HD 5450, Sonar X2 Producer Expanded 64x, NI Komplete, Kore 2, Maschine, SoundminerHD, Adobe Premier and Audition, MOTU 828mk3, M-Audio Axiom, Event20/20 Monitors

"cause even though AVI, MOV, WMV should work - it is my experience that they don't consistently."

It will be helpful for you to consider the ramifications of the fact that .avi, .mov, and .wmv are "containers", "container-formats", or "frameworks" rather than specific formats.

When speaking of media it is always helpful to describe the actual codec that is running within the container or framework.

If you don't speak about the actual codec no one will be able to actually know what they are talking about.

It will appear as if something is being said... but in all truth a phrase like "I have a .mov file" is meaningless unless you merely want to announce that you have a file. A phrase like that doesn't include enough substantive information and so there are very few ways to address the phrase with anything pertinent... except perhaps by repeatedly asking "what codec is your .mov (or .avi or .wmv) using?".

When you get to the point where your first instinct is to open the media properties and discover what codec you are dealing with you will find that a bunch of easy solutions will come to mind immediately upon confronting a new file.

Having said that... a listing of all the useful codecs seems like a really great idea.

     Good Luck.

    best regards,
    mike

you can't import battery KIT files into sonar directly, i suspect that that's just a list of different formats? (like, also can't import gig, nki, esx, etc etc) the job now is to say which are sonar-compatible...

pwal - which instrument included in Sonar X1 Pro will be able to import whole kits from Battery, or programs from Halion / EKS24 / Kontakt?

Because for now I can't remember any - and I'm not talkin' about just "importing wav files" but importing whole programs and kits to be useable and playable.

I have some programs from EXS, E-mu and I don't want to loose them, because I don't use these samplers anymore.

none of them import whole kits from Battery, or programs from Halion / EKS24 / Kontakt (cmiiw) so you'll need to convert them first, to something like SFZ format
