File locations
Just upgraded to X1 (I've been a user since Pro Audio 9) and for all the nice things in X1 (even though it is taking a few moments to get used to them), there is an "under the covers" issue that Cakewalk has never fixed and I think it is time to do something about it! The question is: Where does one find a reference to all files used with a good explanation of what they are used for? Here is the point. We all think differently and we all have some kind of preference for how we organize our work environment. Cakewalk has never facilitated this very well. There are many different places to change file locations and there is no one central section in the Help that outlines what the file is in more than just 1 or 2 lines of unuseful description and how to see/change the location. No matter what software program I use, I organize as follows: - Programs: Anything that makes the software run such as control files (i.e. INI), executables (i.e. EXE, DLL). Normally you install on your Systems disk (which is usually drive C:). Settings (note: not program settings, which should remain here in Programs), developed content, fixed content, etc. should never, ever go here!
- Settings: This is where things like Templates, Presets, etc. should be stored and should not be on your Programs disk.
- Developed Content: This is what you produce, i.e. CWP, CWB, etc. and should not be on your Programs disk.
- Fixed Content: This is what you reference, i.e. loops, samples, etc. and should not be on your Programs disk. If you happen to modify stuff in this category, you would put it here as well. When you buy new stuff, you would put it here as well. But in terms of organization and use, it is fixed unless you are developing these files in which case it would start in Developed Content and eventually be moved or sold to be in Fixed Content.
This is not rocket science. You don't have to agree with how I break out the usage sections - the point of this post is to either find or create a simple 1-2 page document that shows you what the file is, what is it's very specific purpose (please - we know what a WAV file is - tell users exactly how Cakewalk uses the files that are in the classification of WAV in the Preferences --> File Location section) and how you can change the location. I am raising this thread for 2 reasons: - I think it is time for Cakewalk, in some next release, to make this whole thing much easier having a Preferences section where any file that Cakewalk references can be changed to another location. This should be comprehensive and never require to go somewhere else - it should all happen in the 1 Preferences section.
- I am trying to figure out where is the stored location for View --> Audio Library.

Media Browser locations are stored in the Windows Registry at the following location... HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\X1\ContentLocations Scott -- Scott R. I've posted on this topic before. It's very frustarting that Sonar puts a lot of stuff where it wasn't told to do so.

Scott - thanks, but 2 problems: 1. I have Studio (as Producer is overkill for my needs) 2. The registry key with SONAR Studio/X1 only has User Data --- there is no ContentLocations

I only have access to Producer, but with a slight change to the location, I think you'll find it here... Scott - as it turns out, it is in the Wow6432Node as I had re-installed to x32 (and this is perhaps another thread, but for as much as x64 is better it is not well-adopted yet and that's an issue - at least to me). Now - it gets more interesting, after I logged a bug with Cakewalk. The Media tab has 6-7 fixed entries which are in this ContentLocation. You can override the preset, but these fixed entries are not very meaningful if you have done what I did and re-divide the locations in to the major areas of organization I stated initially. So, and this works but anyone reading this has accountability for their own actions, you can delete these fixed Media content presets in the registry ContentLocations and they are gone (I backed the entries up just in case I wanted them back). But I won't want them back having said that. It is much better to just organize the way you work/think and create presets in the Media tab to correspond. That's actually the better solution as you are not forced in to locations or terminology you don't want. Scott - with that out of the way - going back to the original post, I would like to propose that perhaps you would consider sponsoring/providing a Wiki on your DigiFreq site where we could develop the list of all files Cakewalk wants to manage or reference, put good explanations as to what Cakewalk does with them and put good explanations of where to change their location setting? I suppose I could always start a new thread and keep editing based on feedback, but a Wiki would be much better. With a comprehensive list, I would argue that we should rally to ask Cakewalk development to give us one section in Preferences where all locations can be changed. I would also rally to ask them to consider a sectioning as I outlined and ask them to implement in the installation so that one never has to go in to Preferences to change things to begin with. If we petition Cakewalk with an abundance of users, wouldn't they be inclined to hear our need and accomodate? Cakewalk users - what do you say?
