I've never had much success using the factory cards in the computers I use.
I, and most others here, use external interfaces, either USB or firewire. Sound Blaster is generally NOT on our list of favorite sound cards to use for recording. Look at the interfaces made by Focusrite, Roland/Cakewalk, Presonus, M-Audio and others.
If you have flat lines, (2) you are trying to record in stereo. Select a MONO input if it is a mono source such as a mic or a guitar. Recording stereo is a waste of hard drive space if the source is mono.
Be sure the signal path (input) is selected from the proper sound card input where the mic/source is coming from.
When you arm the track for recording, the meters should show movement when there is audio input happening. Once you have that going on, you should be able to record it.
