Filing problem
This seems to be a big problem to me - I MUST be doing something wrong: I have saved my work for at least a couple years as NORMAL (cwp), and I never had any problems retrieving them. My files seemed to be increasingly harder to find in OPEN within Sonar, so I put a folder on my desktop, and saved them together there - which worked fine for a while. Now when I open that folder and try to open a project I get a message that a file of the same name already exists, and it won't open the project. I have to find it somewhere else (in the Start search, or sometimes within Sonar), so my file is worthless. Then sometimes the project will open, but with no sounds (files) in the tracks - just their labels. Solution (I thought): I started saving my projects as cwb to ensure that the associated sound files would be saved with the project, and I saved several of the projects like this that were in the desktop folder I mentioned. I tested each as I went along - saving each project as cwb, and now successfully opening them - with no problem...until I came to my last project. I did the SAME thing...save it as cwb, but IT wouldn't open...not from ANYWHERE (not from Start search, not withing Sonar>Open, or my desktop. I tried saving it several times as cwb. I wouldn't open, and the message called it a "cwp" file, even though I carefully saved it as a cwb. The more projects I have, the bigger problem this gets to be. Usually after a long search and trial and error, I finally get the projects to open, but there must be an easier way, and of course, I know I'm doing something wrong...? Thanks for any help

Right, slow down, calm down, and chill out. First of all, please list your FULL system specs, CPU, RAM, HDD's, filing system, Interface, Driver, Sonar version including all updates, anything else you can think of that's relevant. Also check to see how much space is left on your hard drive(s)

Er, sorry - all your sig says is: X1b 64, Quad core. 8 gig mem., Lexicon Omega From that the first thing I'd do without even thinking about it is to upgrade to X1c & X1d Then I'd empty the picture cache Then I'd run a defrag Then I'd report back

My computer was defragged 4 days ago. I don't know what the picture cache is or how to empty it. Is that to clear up some space? I don't think that (space) is my problem.

Keep in mind that CWP files do not contain the audio tracks, only pointers to the audio tracks which Sonar puts in files called Cxxxxxxxxxx.wav. If you use Per Project folders, Sonar puts the CWP file and the audio files in the same folder so they are kept together for easy backup. If you're not using Per Project folders, you need to make sure you don't delete or move the audio files, If you do, Sonar won't be able to find them when you open the project.

No, it's no simply to clear up space. Sonar's management of it's picture cache folder isn't foolproof and will need emptying manually from time to time to avoid lockups, slowdowns, and just the sort of behaviour you're experiencing. I'm not saying it's the cause of your problems, but a) you need to do this regularly, b) there is absolutely no harm in doing it and c) you can cross it off the list of potential causes

djayers1 All that info is in my message...click on my name. I've got a big system. and lots of memory left. No it's not. Why do you expect us to go searching for the necessary info in order to be able to help you???? It's your job to provide the info needed to solve your problem. Put the info in your signature, and it's always there when you need ask something. When you started saving projects in your desktop folder, did you also modify the list of folders SONAR uses (in the Preferences dialogue)?. Starting to spread project saving here and there is very risky, as they are rather complex files. And do note, that if a cwb-file gets corrupt, you lose the whole project, whereas using cwp and Per Project Audio Files you can often/usually reconstruct them to some extent. So cwb is not recommendable as the only saving format. Are you using Per Project Audio Folders (does X1 have those?? :o/ )
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Some good and helpful information is emerging: cwb is unreliable, good to regularly empty cache (finally found out what that is), files SHOULD be being saved in Per Project folders - and that may help identify at least part of my problem: Having just learned that, I checked and that box IS checked (Per Project), but apparently the files are not (always) being saved there. THIS (opening a project that contained no sound files) is the problem I'm trying to track down: WHY aren't they being saved there - since the box for that has always been checked? Is there a separate place I can go to find those sound files that are missing when I open some projects; would they be called by the same name as the project? Thanks for all the good help!

Have you checked in the root Audio folder for your projects? Even though, when you specify "Per Project" folders, Sonar will always create an "Audio" folder for use when Per Project folder isn't selected Failing that, you'll have to do a Windows search of your entire hard drive, try to identify which wavs you want & re-import them

I opened the Picture Cache to empty it as suggested, but it was already empty - and I have never even had it open before. Does Sonar empty this (periodically) automatically, or is it not being stored here for some reason - and does that matter?

No, Sonar never empties it. Where is it located on your system? Mine are in C:\Cakewalk Projects\Picture Cache I'd say it does matter if they're being stored somewhere else and the cache is simply getting bigger & bigger. Do a Windows search for *.wov & *.wtr files

You still have to tell it the folder name to put it in and have it create the folders for you if they don't already exist.
