Film scoring and audio editing

I need to do some simple scoring and audio editing for a simple movie and I don't really know how I should do it . . .

I'll start from the final edit of the movie (Edited with Final Cut Pro) and I want to do my work in Sonar

Should I export the project from Final Cut with any compression (It's going to be about 400gb!), import in to Sonar, do the editing and scoring and export the whole movie file? . . .

I could also export the movie at a lower quality for Sonar, export the final audio work and put it back in final cut . . . But the problem is that if I compress the video, it will also compress all the audio that was recorded with it . . . And I don't want that! . . . Is there a way to have a "low" quality version of the video and a high quality audio? I could do the Sonar work and send the audio back to Final Cut . . .

Just don't really know the best way to do it . . . Any ideas?

    Hi, Alexandreg,

I know for a fact that there are folks on the Cake forums who do music for video. Do a search of the Sonar forum or an "all forums" search for "Sonar and video" or something along those lines. There was a thread on this topic quite recently in (I think) the Sonar forum.

Sorry, I don't do audio for film/video, so I can't really help you. I know from reading various threads about using Sonar for this that there are some issues regarding what type of video files work best in Sonar. Wish I could help you more but searching should lead you to the threads that will help you. Good luck!

    Best regards,
    Bill

Hey Alexandreg, I've never done anything like a full feature length film, but I worked on a music video not long ago. I asked the video guy to export it at a smaller screen resolution (like 320x240 or something) which made it a lot smaller while keeping the audio high quality. I did the audio stuff and exported it (just the audio) to a wav file, and he synched it back up in his video software. Sorry I don't know any of the details like what software he used. IMO Sonar is not really geared toward full video production; it was really dragging. And that's just on a 5-minute music video, I can't imagine what it would be like with a full movie Good luck!

Hey thanks! I won't import the whole film in sonar at once . . . I'll do it in seperate projects! (Actually, I'm not going to do VERY long films . . . But it can be about 15-20 minutes long.

I'll do what you did . . . Take the smaller resolution film, do the audio work and send the audio back to Final Cut . . .

    Thanks!

Would actually be a good one for Sonar 8 maybe: if it would convert any movie file to a thumbnailed 'work-version', regardless of original format, and work with that.

It's only about keeping synch, noone needs the full res vid for working on sound.

Then at the end of the project it would auto-stitch your soundtrack back to the original file, all without any further ado. Sometimes small improvements make a LOT of difference.

I'm a perfectionist, and perfect is a skinned knee.
