Finally a bass solo I can listen to

I actually enjoyed one

Hi,

Just caught the Anderson Ponty band CD and DVD, and the entry bass solo to "Roundabout" is really super nice.

I'll catch this at home.

Bass solos ... Eberhard Weber and Lothar Meid for me.

Don't tell me, Jean Luc has a son and he also plays violin?

It's Jon Anderson and Jean Luc Ponty, doing re-workings of Yes material. All very musicianly and technically amazing and all that, but..yawn...

Nice!  You can tell the dog wasn't too impressed though, but he's probably heard that song 1,000 times by now.

Cool solo!

But don't tell me it might be time for the Baps to finally learn how to dance now is it?

On a side note, my dog [German Shepherd] use to curl up with her back against the first digital piano I had when I'd start playing it, which had a stand with a thin particle board as part of it on the lower half.

Sure miss that dog - 13 years - great pet!

Not quite! There are as many original pieces there as there are YES pieces. But Jon is a "known" entity for his songs. Jean Luc for his playing ... and in this case also composing, albeit I find that the pieces were not quite on par with some of his solo material, probably because he had to soften up around Jon's vocals.

The album is very nice, but hardly a top ten for the year.

Still very nice. But I would rather watch Return to Forever, WITH Jean Luc ... now that's some serious playing and fun to watch!

I like Jean Luc Ponty in small quantities. There's only so much violin fusion you can handle. My favorite playing by him is on Burnt Weeny Sandwich and also an album he released of him playing Zappa which I have on vinyl back in England somewhere. It's really great, I think it opens with Idiot Bastard Son.

Hey Sharke- thank you for sharing this.  I have been playing and  performing on bass for over forty years
and have rarely been entertained as much by a bass solo.  To my ears, most are self indulgent and I tend to just lose interest.

This one kept my attention, because the composition can readily stand on its own as well as the performer having a high level of musicianship.  Very cool!

Here's a great track from the album "King Kong - Jean Luc Ponty Plays The Music Of Frank Zappa." It was nice to see the album cover on this YouTube video because the copy I had never had a cover - it was a loose record I found in a junk store. What a find! The composition here is unmistakably Zappa. I absolutely love his harmonies, nobody composed like him.

And here's a great version of King Kong from the same album. The keyboard solo is freakin' awesome! (George Duke, natch).

Zappa + Jean Luc = sublime.

ABSOLUTELY ... and that is the period I tend to like my Zappa the most ... which gives more and more credence to Jean Luc's knowledge and music abilities and likely yapss with Frank.

But watching the DVD, I could not help remembering that moment with Shankar and Bruce Springsteen, and they are rehearsing, and Bruce can't keep up, and stops and asks what key are you in, man? ... and Shankar says ... you no worry my friend, you just play your stuff and I join in!!!

Music anyone?
