Finally added 2nd monitor - This rocks!
I know it has been said and said again, but having a 2nd monitor really makes all the difference to the workflow! Finally added it and worked through several projects last night, rearranging screensets, etc. It was almost like getting a whole new DAW! Ok, back to "work" :-) Jon

I've been thinking of adding a second monitor, too. Kinda sick of hearing everything in mono.

Yeah won't be long before you start fantasizing about having 3. I've used 2 for years, even before I started messing with audio, and your workflow quickly expands into them. For Sonar, I have the main screen/track view on one screen and the multidock (browser, PRV, console, plugins etc) on the other. However, I could really use a third screen for the desktop for when you're messing with files and folders, or reading an online tutorial or a PDF manual or watching a video tutorial. It kind of sucks when you have Sonar on both screens and you're trying to read some instructions and every time you click on Sonar to try something out, the manual disappears.

I had 3 for a while, then went back to two, and am quite happy with that. There were no problems having the third one, but it took up enough real estate and a friend of mine had me build a computer, but he only had a 15" CRT display, so I gave him a 32" HDTV flat-screen. But, two work well for me, and with screen sets, I am quite content. Bob Bone

I had no choice but to go the 2 monitor route because I use SONAR on a laptop. Yes, 17"/HD is an OK screensize for a protable comp, but isn't nearly enough real estate for using a DAW to any level of great effect. So I hooked up a 25"/HD monitor and use them simultaneously - and it is WONDERFUL! Just don't be like me and not take advantage of the X-Ray Windows functionality in SONAR (until I'd read about it in a book (DOH!)). Even with a lot of screen space, being able to make some of the plugins "nearly invisible" when you aren't working with them is also a VERY HANDY thing.

I hate having 2 monitors. I did it for a while but it was annoying. The only way I would do it again is if I could have a mouse for each monitor and each mouse would have to stay on it's own monitor. If not, who cares?

I completely understand your argument there - it is certainly a PITA when SONAR loses focus because of something you're doing on the other screen, then you try to record or playback with a keyboard hotkey and nothing happens...but I have trained myself to think of that and have simply worked making sure SONAR is the window in focus a part of my 'routine', along with the practice of moving the mouse across screens. After a while it becomes 2nd nature - or it has for me. But it took a while. A couple of weeks of daily use really.

I had 2 monitors for a while, an ancient early day 19" sony LED, and a more recent 24" Acer gaming monitor. But for most of that time I had a tiny desk. Until I took a trip to Ikea, and then this happened: http://forum.cakewalk.com/Everyday-I-wake-up-to-heaven-m2971201.aspx I'd love to have a third monitor, but then I wouldnt be able to see my glorious uber PC behind it ....

Guitarpima - I have to say - you are the first person I've ever heard that didn't like a second monitor. I suppose I occasionally lose sight of where my cursor is, but rarely. I use two at the office and on my DAW. When I have to work on my laptop (web development), I feel claustrophobic. I use a lot of shortcut keys (like Alt-Tab to switch applications), but it still isn't the same as being able to just look to the right to see the results of what I changed on the left. For those who an issue with application focus, do yourselves a favor and get a device like a tranzport or even the little transport section that is on a keyboard like the PCR-800 (A800) as their controls work whether Sonar has the focus or not. I rarely use the actual keyboard for start-stop-record-rewind-play-undo, as they are handled on 4 different devices around my setup - my countour Shuttle (only when Sonar is focused), the PCR-800, the Tranzport, or the BCF2000. For what it's worth.

Blades, great post. Tip. Speaking about focus. In the old days there was a function that was either added on or in later windows incorporated called X mouse. Today it can be found under the Ease of Access Center then goto "Make the mouse easier to use". Select "Activate window by hovering over it with a mouse." If you have never used this before it may take awhile to get use to it but it is a wonderful way to deal wit focus issues.

Download an app called cursor lock if you have problems with using a mouse across two monitors, it will lock your cursor to the main screen, but I think its only for games.
Really not sure why anyone would have a problem with the mouse in windows on multiple monitors tbh.

Love my two 23" monitors, don't know how I coped with only one. I have Sonar spread across both screens, using it like one wide monitor. The track view looks so cramped if I have to use one now. Screensets mean that I can have Track View on and console on the other, or have the Console/Track View spread across both. It's great. I have contemplated a third, but can't think where to put it where it won't interfere with my "Audio" monitors. Have fun, Jon.

My problem is low vision. I am constantly dragging my pointer to a corner just to locate it. With two monitors that became a huge problem locating it. For me, it would have to be a mouse for each monitor or not.

The thing about two monitors is their so handy. Not just for Sonar and the like but darn near all computer usage will benefit from having them. I've been using two monitors back when Pro Audio was out. I find it hard when I don't have both. If I were to get a third monitor it will be a touch screen and and will take the place that my MC now occupies. The MC wont be abandoned but I will have to find a new place for it. Or get a much bigger desk. The ones I have now are wide screens and work as well as any except better. Plus being LCDs and thin and flat they just look nicer. Another tip is having two separate task bars. I use Classic Shell and Star Dock. One on each monitor. Life is good with two monitors.

Nice, but I can't see how I could keep the correct placement of my nearfield monitors, if I got a third screen. They are already a little too far apart.
Agreed. I'm trying to figure out how to place it above the other two. Maybe a movable arm of some kind.

Watch for neck strain. I have an Argosy desk that only has room for one widescreen monitor, so I bought a stand that allowed me to put a second monitor above. After 10 minutes of use my neck hurt and I went back to a single monitor :( Still don't know how to place a second monitor with my desk, which is awesome in every other aspect.

Completely agree John. I have been using 2 monitors for many years now. For new DAW, I have upgraded from two 17" to two 27" ultra slim LG's. They look amazing and there is so much workspace. Might add a 3rd one for video or a touch screen (this would be great…and I would have it horizontally like a desk…). Less is more doesn't work for monitors on DAWs ;-) John The thing about two monitors is their so handy. Not just for Sonar and the like but darn near all computer usage will benefit from having them.
