plug ins?

hey, i'm running homestudio 2 and the midi sounds are nice on it, but i definatly want to up my selection. For some reason it is the hardest thing in the world to do. I have no idea how to get individual midi's in there, nor do i know where i can get vst's or if they are compatible. anyone know anything about any of this.
