What do you propose to use if not a midi controller?

I've been futzin around with session drummer to no avail. I've looked up tutorials on youtube/forums but they all deal with midi. Can you help me?

Also, I just purchased edirol hypercanvas and it seems that you can use it without a midi controller but I cannot figure i out... and trust me this is my last resort I've been looking and testing but seem to go nowhere. Thanks again.

edit: I think it has something to do with the piano roll view am i right? What do I set the i/o at.

You need help with session drummer. Did you do the Sonar Tutorials inclided in the program. They are great for beginners and a must if your new to the program. Also the manual has step by step instructions on setting up soft synths and the Help file has everything tyou need to know about playing, setting up soft synths. Have you read these and what have you tried to do ,that IS NOT working.

While i totally agree that a controller is vital to softsynths,,,, there are a couple of ways you can put them to some use in the mean time.

You can load midi loops or clips into a track... perhaps start with some general midi files from the net,,,, there's a ton of them,,, including midi drum loops with a drum program such as session drummer. This can be helpful as you learn how to set things up.

You could also set up a midi track pointed to a softsynth, and use the draw tool in the tracks piano roll view to enter notes. (you can also use the staff view, if you're so inclined)

If you have a midi port, any keyboard that has a midi port will do to get you started. It's spring, and you might get lucky and find something cheap at a rummage sale or something, if it helps you get started. Get a controller ASAP, though.

    Sure you can.
    1. Insert your soft synth
    2. Select the Midi Source track
    3. Click on the View menu
    4. Select "Piano Roll"
    5. Select the draw tool
    6. Draw the notes in.
    It's easy.
