ORIGINAL: Lost Souls

I'm very interested in this thread. Great job guys. I am very security minded, and have always used Nortons with Zone Alarm Pro coupled with a firewall router thats pretty good.
I agree that Nortons is a resource hog. The thing that really bothers me is, after turning off all auto update features in my properties, Nortons still dials out hundreds of times. ZA has to spend log time to block all attempts, but I thought I "turned off" auto update??????

So questions:
I'm very interested in this AVG, but Are we talking about the free version only? Does the commercial version become a resource hog like the others? I ask because I usually like to pay for the better one.
Also, I've noticed that AVG also has a firewall version. Does anyone have experience with that?

Paranoya! I usually disable my lan, turn off my modem, and then turn off my AV and firewall before I run Sonar. Hence my interest in this thread.

I use the paid version and no it's not a hog. I just boot up and usually let it run its scan before doing anything but you dont have to. As for the Firewall I remember not liking it for some reason but cant remember why. I just use the windows firewall and have had no problems. And before I open Sonar I just go to the Resident Shield select disable, and away I go. I've also left it running and used Sonar with no problems.

I was going to comment that I doubt the paid version is any less light than the free version. IIUC, all it does is to unlock some grayed-out areas that give you more or less control of when & how it scans... if anything, it looks like it gives you the option to make it lighter. Anyway, thanks for clarifying.

I also just use the Windows firewall with no problems. If you're behind a router, then all the better. I figure the router is doing most of the heavy lifting anyway.

Disabling resident shield sounds OK, but you may want to disconnect your network connection when you do it... or at least don't surf or answer email!!

Windows firewall is a joke, and not a very good one, at that. Best get yourself one of these ugly monitor-lizards:

http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

On the Island of Komodo (Indonesia) they get as big as 3 meters and could easily peel a medieval knight out of his harnass, if he didn't get fried in it first.

Use linux for your web machine.

this isn't a stupid I love linux post - seriously, your music machine will be much better offline and your net machine is much better off being linux as it's less vulnerable.

Most linuxes out-of-the-box aren't much better these days, plus the fact that malware makers are currently concentrating their efforts on exactly those distros - basically good advice, but could turn sour, you will ALWAYS need to go the extra mile for a decent protection, even on Linux.

And that's the problem, most people are bound to end up with an easy-install distro with quite a few doors wide open, all for the sake of user convenience.

Just thought I'd share this chart with everyone:

http://www.firewallleaktester.com/tests.php

I don't know how up-to-date it is, but the site does provide some tools to leak test your firewall if you want. Bear in mind that chart only concentrates on the firewall and not the anti-virus.

If you dig around on that site you can find some general security software recommendations as well.

I really like F-Secure

Its an excellent no nonsence Virus checker, with firweal and spyware stuff all build in.

The best bit though is it has an exceptions section, wherby it will ont run a scan or do any background actions while you are using certain user defined aps.

In my personal experience (90 day trial from some magazine cd), F-secure was really slow (at least compared to Kaspersky).

Kaspersky has an internet suite that has all the firewall/spyware stuff as well. The anti-virus module (whether purchased alone or as part of the suite) has a general usage throttle - so it won't consume as much cpu if another cpu-heavy-process is running.

Also, there's an option to only scan files that have not been scanned previously - another time saving option.

Anyway - I don't advertise for Kaspersky so this is the last plug I make for them.

Very timely review in PC World HERE http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,130869/article.html

About 2 years ago I read a similar review (I think PC mag or PC world) that showed TrendMicro 1st or 2nd (now 8th). This review currently shows Kaspersky as 1st, then it was dead last! For that reason I got TrendMicro and just renewed 2 weeks ago. I also added a copy (three licenses) to my new DAW which norton just expired. It DID find spyware that Norton missed.

I wouldn't think a 1st and last rated company could switch places in only 2-3 years. Maybe these tests are very subjective and I was reading reviews by two different companies.

I don't understand what you mean by this - according to the same table?

No, not the same table. The table/review referenced in this thread shows Kaspersky as 1st/best and TrendMicro as 8th. A different review I read somewhere (PC Mag, PC world, or some online review) about 2 or 3 years ago showed TrendMicro as 1st or 2nd (don't remember) and Kaspersky dead last of about 7 or 8. I was just saying that is fast reversal for both companies.

There's always going to be diffences in testing methods, but my advice for Comodo is based upon this one, and the fact it comes out on top, and is FREE.

What is the best anti-virus?

That's easy - Sonar. It still won't integrate with my Access Virus TI.

Funny... I haven't owned a hardware analog synth since the one I built in the 80's. (It was a PAiA Proteus I, made with the same CES analog module chips that were in the Sequential Prophet V. Very sweet. And very moddable. Ghetto even.) Anyway, even though the sound has come back in a big way, now that we have wonderful plugins (the list is long), I have no need to go back to hardware.

I know there are some diehard purists, tweakheads and circuit benders out there. But I already worked all those geeky urges out of my system 20 years ago!

Maybe that's it. DAWs disinfected me from the analog hardware virus.

Please provide some evidence to back up your assertions that:

  • Linux out-of-the-box isn't much better (than Windows XP?) from a security standpoint. The Linux universe is a large one, but let's choose the most popular, Ubuntu, for our purposes here.
  • Malware writers have shifted their focus to Linux.

+1 for Avast.    I had AVG and got some viruses.  Avast has been working well for me.

Also don't overlook your firewall protection.  Windows firewall didn't cut it for me.  I use the excellent (and Free) Online Armor.

A couple of things.

1. Linux is far more secure out of the box than Windows is.
I'd like to see some proof that it isn't and no I'm far from a Linux fanboi. BTW no OS is going to prevent social engineering hacks or protect an ignorant user from himself, ie:running as root or administrator.

2. I like Comodo as well although the name reminds me of a toilet for some reason :)

3. Sometimes picking a lesser known antivirus or firewall program can be a good thing because the hackers tend to focus on fooling the top tier programs because it's an additional feather in their cap.

Just my 2 cents.

Avast 5.0 free here. However, with Avast 4.3 installed, a nasty virus/malware did manage to get through. Hoping version 5 will be better. I had viruses get through with AVG, too, that's why I switched a while back.

i use microsoft security essentials on all three of my pc's and have never had a problem,  it works with windows flawlessly(so far).  I have been running for over six months.  I run it while running sonar and have had no problems.  Oh,  and its free!

There is nothing like best Anti-Virus, all that is depends on your needs. But the information below should help. Paying for an anti-virus Biggie Symantec / Norton or McAfee, and it will cost about £ 50 per year. But you can also enjoy a wide range of decent free programs. I think you can use the Zone Alarm total security. It has the best detection ratio and inbuilt firewall with child control. It is the best one.
