Panning disappears when using Bus

Hi,

Two part question here:

I have three guitar tracks on a section of a song. One is panned 75% left, one 75% right and one center. I want to apply the same effect to all three, so I sent them all to a bus which contains the effect (Amplitube LE), so save CPU resources. Without the effect, the stereo effect works fine, but when I turn on the Amplitube, it seems to go mono on me and everything is centered. Is there a workaround to this? I've noticed this on several other plugins too.

One option I thought of was using an Effect Send. This brings up my second question:

What is the difference between the Effect Send and a Stereo Bus? I couldn't find anything about effect sends in my Sonar Power book and couldn't find anything in the Forum either. Is the Effect Send only for hardware devices? Is this where side-chaining is applied? (I'm not too sure on what exactly that entails) Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!

I don't have Amplitube, but it sounds like it's a mono effect. You could save the settings for it as a preset and apply that preset to each of the guitar tracks individually before they go to the bus. At that point, you could also bounce the 3 guitar tracks (with effects applied) to a new stereo track. Then archive the originals. That'll conserve CPU horsepower. I don't think there is a funcional difference between the Effect Send and the Stereo bus. You can configure them to do the same things. I think CW just pre-labeled some of them for convenience depending upon which Template you start with........

    Spot on Rob.
Amplitube LE is a mono effect. It's not the bus, it's the mono effect in the bus. Amplitube LE is not a particularly heavy effect on the CPU, so multiple instances shouldn't be a problem.
    Superdan,
You might find that subtle variations in the settings for the 3 guitars are more satisfying than having all 3 the same. Depends on what you are after.
At any rate, the procedure Rob suggested will work for you.

Yeah I agree, and that's what I ended up doing. Each guitar had a slightly higher level of overdrive and it contrasted very well!

OK so my only other question is, when should I use the Effect Send as opposed to a Stereo Bus? What are the advantages of one over the other? I just feel like I have a feature sitting in front of me that I'm not using for lack of knowledge.

You'd use the Effect Send if you still wanted the original track in the mix as well. A Stereo Bus wouldn't allow for the pre-bussed signal to be heard as is.

A great example would be a drum kit. You could send the original tracks into the mix as they are, but use the Effect Send to a bus that was heavily compressed and reverbed. Then, with the volume control on the FX Bus, you could mix the comp/rev drum mix in with the original clean one.
